Help with Upgrading to Gaming PC?

that depends on what resolution you plan on playing at
most modern games at 1680x1050? sure, all? no, some games like crysis or battlefield 3 are pretty demanding
a lot of games are moving to quadcore, so a quadcore (or at least quad threaded) cpu is recommended

What do you class as modern games? If you are talking about Battlefield 3 then forget it, a 550TI is nowhere near enough.

Now if we were talking low/med @1080p you might get a more positive answer. As for the CPU it really depends on the game, anything CPU intensive is going to give you trouble but it should handle most games ok.

We need more context to make a good recommendation. As others have indicated, what types of games are you interested and at what resolutions? What is your budget? Are you paying retail for those parts or getting them cheap from a buddy? What hardware do you currently have?
