Help with True 120 Extreme please

Hiya,

Having a terrible problem with my True 120 Extreme heatsink I just got. I've mounted and remounted this sucker numerous times. Every time it's loose and can shift about if I push on it after I've seated it. My temps are terrible, it idles around 38-48 on all four cores, but when I load it, skyrockets to 80 really fast.

It looks like the true's contact surface to the cpu is flat enough, and I know my CPU is flat. I've tried mounting this thing again and again 🙂 Is this RMA material or is this user error ? Anyone have any input or experience with this ?

well, you can try the penny mod. The bracket isn't very tight, but also, after you mount it, it will still move a bit. Don't push on it. You don't want bubbles in your thermal paste. The penny mod allows a tighter fit on the CPU. But what CPU are you using? For some CPUs, 38C idle is not bad, but 80C load is a tad high.

Guess the base of the heatsink isnt making good contact with the IHS. Spidey senses tell me that its time to rip out your sanding papers for a long lapping session.

I know there is some sort of trick to check this with a flashlight correct ?

i need to know your OC.

Your Core Voltage.

and if possible an ambient reading right in front of your case.

Also no offense, but that fan is an expensive but almost worthless fan. A better fan with greater static could give you better performance.

Lapping is certainly recommended, but it won't help your problem with the sink shifting around, that's due to lack of pressure and an inherent problem with Theramlright's design.

Look up "TRUE washer mod" as that may help. The problem is that the TRUE's bolts bottom out into the back plate, preventing you from applying additional pressure on the clamp to back plate. Placing a washer underneath the clamp will give you more pressure, but its still not enough, imo.

I ended up using 4 x 2" 8/40 bolts through the back of the mobo and inverted the TRUE's X-clamp and tightened them on the top with some wing nuts. Needless to say the TRUE no longer moves around. I dropped my load temps 10-14C between this mod and lapping the TRUE, but you can probably expect 5-7C drop by doing either individually (based on other reports).
