Help with speakers

Hi,

I just recently picked up a Samsung LN40A550 on sale about a month ago and I'm very pleased with it so far. It's my first HDTV and it was on sale for 997+free shipping (seemed like a hot deal to me)

The setup <-sorry for the poor pic quality, took it with my iphone.

The only issue I have is the speakers are horrid even to my untrained ears. I'm not asking for much, so what I'm looking for is just a 2.1 setup... I think. Anything that won't break the bank will be good. I wouldn't mind having digital hookups, but I know nothing about speakers... guide me!

Also, if I get a DVI to HDMI cable to hook my PC up, It should be a really good image quality, correct?

That's not enough to get something decent with digital inputs (not that having a digital input matters as much for a 2.1 set).

$100 will get you an ok 2.1 computer speaker setup.
(Klipsch promedia 2.1 when on sale, Logitech z-2300, etc.)

Monoprice has affordable cables. DVI to HDMI from the computer to the TV should look good.

Thanks, I'll check into those speakers now. Like I said, I'm not looking for much, just something that sounds better than what the TV has.

The bass sounds like there's a little guy in the TV thumping a peice of saran-wrap, it's horrid.
 
Alternatively you might be able to find someone selling their old stereo setup on craigslist or something.
 
Try some of the settings in this thread at avsforum.

I own this tv, and I have been pleased with the sound. It's obviously nothing close to home theater, but for what I expected from television speakers, it does quite well.

Some people in that thread have said that it made a huge difference. I didn't spend a lot of time comparing - I tried the settings, liked them, and left it like that.

Thanks for the link, I've actually stumbled upon that a few days ago and it helped quite a bit with everything BUT the bass. If it weren't for the horrid bass sound I'd stick with the built in speakers for sure. Perhaps I could get away with just a sub???? or is that not how it works...
 
You could probably add a sub to the system (I haven't looked up your manual), but I believe you'd just be able to add one and not really "replace" the bass since the speakers from the TV would still be trying to do the full sound spectrum. So that would mean you'd get the crappy bass from the TV speakers along with the bass from a subwoofer.

It could possibly work if the equalizer doesn't affect the audio output from the TV (only the internal speakers), if the lowest equalizer band can cut out all the bass, and if the audio output from the TV can be set to variable with the TV speakers still active.
 
I have a Sammy LN-T4671F and the audio is superb. I also have my video DVI port using a HDMI/DVI cable going to the TV and the picture is fantastic. However I cannot get audio from my sound card to the TV. I am trying to find a solution to this problem. Any way you can route your sound card through your video card?

Can't you just hook up an audio connection from the soundcard to the TV?

I am doing that via 3.5mm plug to an RCA phono cable. This is plugged into the RCA input jacks that supposedly is used in conjuction with the HDMI port. I am getting no sound but I can use the same cables and get sound from my stereo receiver. The main board has been replaced and the way I have it hooked up should work according to the manual.
