i'm not sure if this has been a common problem, but i've been having trouble with my surround sound since updating to winxp. i can't get my back speakers to work alongside my front speakers. interestingly enough, i used to be able to work both front and back with teh integrated soundcard (CMI 7838), but then the subwoofer wouldn't work. so i got a soundblaster live, thinking it might be compatibility issue, but no luck there, either. that time, i could only get the front set of speakers with the subwoofer, or the back set of speakers with the subwoofer, depending which combination of plugs i used. So, then i switched back to the integrated sound, reverting back to the surround sound with no subwoofer, and then updated those drivers. Now i have the same problem i had with teh soundblaster live, with only one set working at a time. Note that when i used teh sblive, it also had the latest xp drivers.

So, anyone have any ideas as to what i can do? i'm at a loss as to whats happening. It worked fine with win2k... any help would be appreciated.

When I got XP I tried to get rear speakers on XP native drivers, and never could. The drivers for my particular sound card solved that.

i was under the assumption that these aren't used unless you're listening to dolby/dts or whatever ... you know like dvds and stuff? i know winamp has a 5 speaker plugin. otherwise my poor two rear speakers in my z-640s are hardly ever used.

You should install the software that came with your sound card... It will install bunch of control software like surround mixer, volume control, diagnostics and speaker settings.. on speaker settings you should selec 5.1 speakers... I had this problem many times..

PS: I am using Audigy2 but I don't think it will make a difference, though I think I had the same problems when Iw as using Live too but I can't really remember, try what I said..
