Help with sound in linux

jhu

Lifer
i've been playing around with midi playback on my computer. i first started with timidity to play back midis, but the processor usage was rather high (40%-90% even on a athlon64 2.4ghz!). instead i loaded the soundfont files through the audio driver with asfxload. this was pretty easy since i have a sound blaster live! card. so midi playback works wonderfully. however, now i can't play any sounds other than midi files. it's the weirdest thing.

i though perhaps the sound card needed to be reset somehow. so i rebooted. still won't play mp3, wav, etc. i've tried xmms, mplayer, and mpg123, but still no sound. midi playback works just fine with xmms or rosegarden. i boot into windows, but audio playback works. however, when i boot back into linux, it's the same thing: mp3, wav, etc won't play. midi plays just fine. i've checked the mixer settings and all the relevant volume sliders are at their maximum.

what gives? i'm using debian 4.0 if that matters.
