This is my first time posting and you guys seem to give good advice so here's my problem. Well actually I have 2 but I think they are related in some way...

I jsut recently got a 40 gig western digital drive that supports up to ata 100 but stupid me didnt see it was OEM and I dont have a card. So, I try to plug it into my ata 66 slot thinking thatll be better than nothing. But... BIOS doesnt detect it. I set the jumpers and everything. I have an be6-II mobo and it shows up in the high tech screen that follows BIOs for those wo own one. I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on. Oh... I also connected my old 8 gig drive as slave too...

Secondly... Ever since I installed windows onto my new hard drive and reinstalled everything my burner doesnt work. Its a crappy Acer that I bought a while ago before I found out about this burner. Anyone have any idea whats wrong? It reads cds fine but cd-rwin, easy cd, and direct cd dont work on it. Any help would be appreciated...

ATA100 drives can be used on boards that only support ATA66. So, that shouldn't be the problem. Just make sure your ribbons are lined up right. The blue end should go into the motherboard - and the other two connectors can attach to either device in any order. If the ribbon is not hooked up correctly - it will not detect the drive.

If you are unsure about the correct position of the ribbons - just experiment a little. But, I would bet that is your problem with the hard drive.

Are you sure you have current (up-to-date) drivers/software for your burner? That can make a big difference. Were you running it under a different operating system without trouble? If so, check for updates with Acer.

Yah, I am sure my ribbons were lined up right because the hard drives showed up in the hightech screen later. I wqas wondering if anyone else who had a be6-II had ever run across this. Im almost usre that its from using my 40 gig and an old 8 gig drive together but I cant figure out whay it would do that.

As for my burner... I installed all the same software and it says it works but it doesnt. I did check the website for updated drivers but all i found were drivers for firmware and I wasnt sure if I should try that yet... Thanks though...

If you are using the highpoint controller, then the drive will NOT appear in the bios for the mainboard's controllers. They are separate and therefore, if the drive is connected to one it will not appear on the other one. Since you say the drive shows up on the highpoint screen then everything is alright. Just make sure the drivers for the controller are installed in Windows. Does that make sense?

Good luck. :)

I tried doing that Neely but windows wouldnt start up and my comp would just try my other boot devices.

I just ran a test and tried pulling my old 8 gig drive and leaving my 40 gig one as master. BIOS did not detect it. I think it has something to do with me installing windows from my 8 gig drive. Anyone know how to switch the active drive? Right now my 40 gig is drive 2 and I need to switch it to drive 1 but my 8 gig is already drive 1. Thanks for any help...
