First off thanks for any help. My brother-in-law's parents are trying to get internet access in their business. They use two computers but they are networked to each other (Have a Cat 5 cable running from each others network cards).

Computer 1 ------- Network cable --------- Computer 2

They had Cablevision come by and install the coaxial line and leave the modem there since the install tech apparently saw that he couldn't just simply plug in a Cat 5 cable from the modem into the computer and just left. I figured that I could get it setup via USB. Brought the drivers via USB drive(Motorola SBV5120, it's a VoIP modem), USB cable, etc. Motorola doesn't have any drivers available for download on their support page so I searched for USB drivers online and found them for the SBV5120. The tech didn't even leave a CD which the install guide on Motorola's website says there should be.

Did the plug and play install of the drivers via the card, no conflicts in Device Manager (though their computer was Windows 2000, I thought it was XP so I may have loaded the XP drivers instead, but wouldn't it not let me install the drivers if there was a conflict?), and nothing.

Went to cmd, ipconfig /all. Inputted all the info into the TCP/IP under network connections, still nothing. Tried using auto IP address nothing. Even went so far as doing a /ipconfig /release, then /renew, retyping in the IP, the subnet, the DNS, etc and still no internet access. All the activity lights are showing up on the front of the modem. I'm completely dumbfounded on what the problem is, is ther something glaring that I'm overlooking?

I was hoping that I could just connect using the USB connection since I had a spare USB cable laying around. But I'll go out and purchase a switch/router if I need to (but they only need internet access on one computer so getting a router would be kinda pointless).

Thanks for any and all help.

USB is a curse for Internet Sharing installations.

AFAIC there is No point even to start with configuration.

The SBV5120. has also an Ethernet output, so do it the right way.

Get a router, hook up the WAN/Internet port of the router to the cable modem and connect the PC's ethernet jacks to the router. Problems all served and routers today cost between $10-$100 depending on how good of router you want and the features you need.

Yeah I had a feeling that it was too good to be true. I wonder why they even give you an option to try and use USB if it's more trouble than good.

Will just using a router be any different that using a direct connection that's being used right now? The reason I ask is the two computers are connected via network cable because they're used as POS computers and need to stay connected together to manage inventories and a constantly updated database. I was initially going to just buy a router and connect it that way but I didn't want to potentially interfere with the current connection if it wouldn't keep the two computers sharing one brain essentially.
