Help with repairing Windows XP installation.

Could someone please tell a "well dressed, slow learner" how to use the repair function for Windows XP? I have my mobo set to boot to CDROM, but I keep getting to my dual boot menu. What am I not doing? Thx for your help. W98SE/WXP, Abit BF6, PIII700, 256, GF3Ti200, SB Live, DVD, CDRW.😕

some comps will require you to press a (any) key during the boot screens
to boot from the CD. If not, the CD will be skipped.

If there is a choice (something like) "boot from other devices" in your BIOS right after the
boot device order, try enabling it.

Also might try putting your CDROM on it's own IDE connection (as master device)

afterthought:

you do have a bootable CD in the CDROM when you turn on your comp... right?

Yup, I have the boot from other device enabled. CDROM is on its own channel. I have the full version of XP home. Which I understood was bootable. Maybe I'm wrong.

Ok, secondary IDE channel was set to none. Changed it to auto and that did it. So now I get to the 3 selections in setup. I hit (R) and get to the recovery console. Now what? Appreciate your help.

I think you are accessing the automatic system recovery system that requires you to use the ASR diskette and system backup media that was created earlier you would have to have initiated this process using the ASR wizzard.

from windows help:

To recover from a system failure using Automated System Recovery
Make sure you have the following items before you begin the recovery procedure:
Your previously created Automated System Recovery (ASR) floppy disk.
Your previously created backup media.
The original operating system installation CD.
Insert the original operating system installation CD into your CD drive.
Restart your computer. If prompted to press a key in order to start the computer from CD, press the appropriate key.
Press F2 when prompted during the text-only mode section of Setup. You will be prompted to insert the ASR floppy disk you have previously created.
Follow the directions on the screen.
Note

ASR will not restore your data files. For more information about backing up and restoring your data files, click Related Topics.

end:

Does the screen you get to have any sort of prompts or anything? If you didnt do a system backup, you probably won't be able to do a restore....

maybe if you don't go to the recovery screen and go to safe mode startup instead, it will let you use one of the system restore points (which are created by windows automatically unless you have disabled that feature).

{ Start => control panel => Performance & Maintenance => system restore } will get you to that feature... if you can get XP to run in safe mode

From Windows Help:

To run System Restore in safe mode
Access System Restore through Help and Support.
Follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes

To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Using System Restore to undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard.
While the computer is in safe mode, System Restore does not create any restore points. Therefore, you cannot undo a restoration that you performed when the computer was in safe mode.
You can use System Restore to restore your computer to any restore point while in safe mode. If you cannot start the computer in standard mode, you can use System Restore to restore to a time when you could start the computer without errors.
To restore to a time when your computer started without errors, select a restore point as close to the time you remember it last started without errors.
If System Restore is suspended because of insufficient disk space, you cannot enable it by making more disk space available while in safe mode. You must restart the computer in standard mode and make more disk space available.
