help with refresh rate in linux, lower rez = lower refresh ?

My monitor died last week (Viewsonic PS790), got a new one (Viewsonic P95f). The new monitor has higher refresh rates. In Mandrake 9.1, the PS790 was in the list of Monitors, the new is not.
So I went to custom, and input the correct values for "fh: 30~110kHz; fv: 50~160Hz".
I have desktop in both Linux and XP at 1280x1024, and in XP under display properties it is at 85hz. This moniter has a thingy under its menu called "Viewmeter", and it shows the signal it's receiving. Both XP and Linux match (for desktop), it's "FH +91.1 KHz FV +85.0 Hz". So I'm pretty sure I have 85hz refresh rate for both on desktop. So all is good here.

When I play games (in linux), I have the resolusion lower of course, Quake3 is at 1024x768 and the monitor reads "FH 68 / FV 80". Isn't this Lower than my Desktop refresh ?.

When I play Enemy Territory, I play it at 800x600 and it gets worse (forgot to write down signal numbers), but it's lower then the Q3 ones. The game hiccups as well, and the only thing different from a week ago is the monitor. I have "cg_drawfps" showing me my Frames per Second is going nuts. So I know the refresh rate is getting lower with the lower rez being used. I switched ET to 1024x768 and performance improved, WTF !!! Was never like this before, it get better as rez got lower.

When a moniter is in the List of monitors under linux KDE, I'm guessing it has some sort of script telling linux what refresh rate to use for each rez is displayed. Because this new one is not listed, do I need to create one ?.

This monitor is listed for supporting 1280x1024 @ 100hz and 1600x1200 @87hz, I'll be very happy to have ET running at 800x600 @ 85hz, but not lower. There has got to be some way of telling linux, Do Not Lower the Refresh Rate when Resolution gets Lower.

Don't know why there is a Sony listed at the beginning, as the only 2 moniters ever used are the ones I listed above.

You should be able to remove everyline that starts with Modeline

Those are definitions for each resolution specifying a certain set of timings ie refresh rate etc.

I would comment them out, by placing # in front of them and restart X. And try playing your games...it should help.

No sh!t. I don't know why some configuration utilities still insist on using them. Everytime they do I go into vi and start with the ddddddddddddddddddd stuff.

ok, thx and I'll give it a try. Last time I played with a similar file playing with my Sound config, I couldn't get back into X. This gave me 1st experience in "vi". I'll make backup this time
