Help with powersupply

Well 4 years ago I bought a Compaq comp(bad idea buying retail I know), just incase you need it, the specs are: AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 512MB Ram, Fx 5200 128MB, 60GB hid. Ok well my powersupply is dead, so now I need a new one, heres the problem: On the powersupply, it says replace with a compaq spare, so I looked it up online and its $80-$120 on different sites...so do I really have to buy a compaq spare or they just put that to make extra money? Or can I go for a typical powersupply?

you do not need to buy the powr supply from compaq. they are not any different than the ones you buy at the stores and are probably even cheaper quality. the only problem you might encounter is the fitment of the power supply. there might be a piece of metal that might get in the way, but you can just cut it.

Ahhh k thnx, one more question, whats a good powersupply, is 300W any good?

300W should be considered minimum. If you plan on building your own system in the future, consider 350 or 400 now, instead of later. Note that many people here consider name-brand PSUs first for things like overclocking, system stability, etc...you could go the cheap route, it's up to you.

I have a Compaq case, I dunno does that mean a powersupply that is not a Compaq will not fit in?
