My friend's pc just acted up yesterday. He was running warcraft3 and suddenly the monitor screen went blank and the pc was non-responsive. We hit the reset button and the pc restarted. However, the weird problem is that, the pc will start up pass the bios and the winxp loading screen will come on. After 5 seconds, things will go blank again. We even hit the eject button on the DVD rom and CD-RW, it won't eject and yet there was still power. Nothing else worked. Not even the reset button. We had to totally shut off.

So far, we've tried changing HDDs, power supplies, memory, and vga card. The pc still won't start up. It will just stop after few seconds loading windows xp.

Could it be the motherboard?

He is running a Athlon Thunderbird 1GB, MSI K7T Pro 2-A, with 384 MB of SDRAM PC133.

Any advice?? Thanks in advance.

Try booting to safe mode (F8 when PC is booting). If you can make it into safe mode you most likely have a software/driver issue to resolve. You can also try pulling all expansion cards except the video card.

Thanks for the replies. We've decided to just replace the mobo. I have a feeling there was some power surge and it kinda blew half the mobo? Just my thoughts. Oh yea, one of his room light bulbs went off too.

What's next?? :Q

Well, I'm not sure what the exact problem is, but I can speak from personal experience about the MSI K7T Pro2A. I had (note, had) one of these when they first came out. One day I was just sitting here playing a game of Worms 2....then, W2K blue screen w/ the memory dump. Pressed reset and the machine never posted again. Like you, I removed and/or swapped out parts one by one...everything from the sound card, CPU, NIC, memory, etc... Sent the board back to Monarch Computer (a nightmare in itself) and they confirmed a dead board. The replacement (DFI AK74-EC) they sent has worked fine ever since. Not knocking MSI, because every manufacturer makes a bad board now and then, but when I experienced my headache with it I did a lot of searching on the net and found a lot of people having a "sudden death" problem with that exact board.

Good luck!

Ever try reformating just to be sure?

Also possible like the others have said that the motherboard is dead :(
