Help with P5B Deluxe - PATA or SATA DVD?

I just ordered most of the parts for my first build using the Asus P5B Deluxe.

One of the parts that I have yet to order is the DVD writer. I have read lots of posts here suggesting that the lack of native support for PATA drives on the p965 chipset may cause problems, particularly when it comes to recognizing the DVD drive or installing the drivers. As a result I am considering ordering a SATA DVD drive. The round cables will also help air flow and cable management, an added plus.

However, I am very confused by many posts I have read about configuring the SATA ports correctly (as AHCI instead of IDE, for example). I don't want to trade one problem (lack of native PATA support) for one that seems more complicated (correct configuration of the Jmicron controller or Intel SATA ports).

Could someone please explain the advantages and disadvantages of getting a PATA or SATA DVD drive as they relate to a build with the P5B Deluxe? Would either choice make for an easier or a more difficult build/install? As a first time builder and complete n00b, I want to prevent as many problems as I can!

Easiest install: SATA DVD.

I ordered the Samsung 18x sata from the egg.

As far as JMicron and AHCI and IDE. You have to decide if you want to use RAID. If you do then you would need to install the Intel Matrix Sorage Controller for the ICH8R BEFORE Windows install.

There is no problem with the JMicron if you installed the JMicron drivers.

Thanks for the info. I was also looking at the Samsung from the egg, I will go ahead and order it. The SATA cables will also help cable management and air flow, so the relatively small price difference is worth it.

Be sure to plug your boot sata drive in sata 1. In your manual there is an explanation about which sata is for boot drive and which one for storage.

The Samsung DVD is working well for me. Just made a couple of data DVD discs with no trouble.

Out of curiosity, do you have the DVD connected to the ICH8R SATA ports, or to the Jmicron controller SATA ports?

Samsung DVD sata to the Intel chip! NEC DVD IDE to the IDE JMicron. Work fine.

I currently have two SATA hard drives running RAID 0 that are connected to SATA1 and SATA2. I was thinking about installing a SATA DVD burner on SATA3. Do you think this would work even though I have the HDD's using RAID? Thanks in advance...

No problem. You can connect it internally or externally. black sata connectors are for storage (slave) red for boot drive. Do you have any connected IDE drive? Intel ICH8R does not have native IDE that's why the JMicron was added to the MB by Asus.

I also am wondering about this. My plan is for 1 sata Hdd and 1 sata dvdrw. No Raid. Just wandering how they should be hooked up.

Sata HD to sata red 1, sata dvdr to any red sata connector. Do not install JMicron driver.

I do not want to make this any more complicated than necessary but do you want to use advanced features of SATA such as hot swap? Did you already install Windows?

If not, then before Windows install you need to enable AHCI in bios under SATA, then you need to install the Intel Matrix Storage Controller with a floppy (windows will prompt you and you will hit F6) then you will install window.

You only have to do this if you want advanced features of SATA from the Intel ICH8R.

Is the Intel Matrix Storage driver needed if I do NOT plan on using RAID? I am connecting a SATA HDD (my only HDD) and a SATA DVD RW, both to the SATA ports on the ICH8R configured as AHCI. If I understand it correctly, to get this to work I need the AHCI driver for the ICH8R, but I only need the Matrix controllers if I need to use RAID. Is this correct?

EDIT: Never mind, I just went back to your first reply and noticed that you said that teh Matrix controller is only needed for RAID. Sorry, I misunderstood your latest reply to the thread. This is what happens when you read something after your 3 year old has kept you up all night with a fever :roll:

No problem. You do NOT need AHCI NOR Intel Matrix Controller for your set up. You also do NOT need the JMIcron driver.

I don't have any plans to do anything with the HD, other than use it like my IDE, maybe I need to do more reserch. I haven't even purchased anything yet, still in the planning stages. I am kind of on a budget, but once system is built, later I'll probably add another drive to add RAID.
