hi i have a p4 2.4 and i want to overclock it to 3.0. I have overclock it to 3.0 already but it is very unstable. I'm using the heat sink and fan that orginally came with the p4 chip. Any recommendations for a good heat sink and fan that would make my system stable at 3.0. Any other suggestion would be great too thanks.

I rather it to be quiet but minimal noise from the fan is ok. Thanks Again

ABIT SR7-8X mother board
antec trueblue 430w
pc 2700 512 ram gerneric from frys - so i buy new ones from crucial
ati radeon 9500 tweak to 9700 pro
maxtor 120gb

Another question do you guys check your cpu temperature using the bios or a software. If software what do you use? I'm new at this overclocking stuff thanks.

motherboard monitor 5 for the software

you probably will have to raise the vcore a bit to get it stable
try putting it to 1.6v and see what happens

and make sure you locked the pci/agp in spec

yes i lock the agp/pci specs already but am not very fond to increasing voltage on my cpu. Will it help if i cool down my cpu ? will that keep it stable ?

it might, but you probably will need at least somehwat of a voltage increase

1.55v or 1.525v wont do much damage to it

heatsinks:
alpha pal8942
swiftech mcx4000 or mcx478

those mount through the holes though, so youd have to remove the black p4 heatsink mounting eqiupment

how are temperatures?
did you use the thermal pad, or did you scrape thta off and use thermal grease of some sort?

well, it's a good thing that ur AGP and PCI clocks are locked. you should try getting a better HSF combo tho, usually the retail HSF can't really cut when overclocking a P4. you may want to try upping the Vcore also, i've noticed that even with a 1.6v the temps of the CPU are still pretty much within reasonable bounds.

as for a better HSF combo, what is ur budget? i would suggest a SLK-900U if money is not a problem, it is so far the best HS out in the market and you can couple it with a low noise fan also if you are worried about noise.

hope this helps. and another thing, i've noticed that generic ram doesn't really cut when overclocking. especially FSB clocking. get the crucial ram if you want the 3ghz clock.
