Hi,

I'm currently gathering a host of equipment to use as my lab for the CCNA. I've recently come accross an very old cat 1900 24 port switch at work. When I say old I mean the console port has a D type serial connector as opposed to RJ45.

I managed to get the factory installed password from cisco TAC - to discover a lovely menu driven mangement system. The firmware quotes V5.25 - system revision 1 with 1MB flash. Is there any hope of their being a semi recent IOS image that can be flashed to this switch? I mean, one where I can get CLI access instead of menu?

Thanks everyone.

Cheers,

Andy

Why not ask the TAC? :)

It's somewhat doubtful any recent IOS will even fit in 1MB of flash. But I don't know if the 1900 switch IOS is as big as others. I know when I was working with 2500s the 4MB of flash wasn't enough. (At least I think I know. It's been a year.)

You sure there's no access to a command line? The menu interface you're seeing isn't the usual walk-through configuration that you get when you wipe configuration in IOS?

Hi,

I would ask the TAC - but the thing's out of warranty and we don't have a support contract the covers it - so I guess I'm unlikely to get very far.

It's a real old box from '96/'97 I think. It's definitely menu driven - no CLI, no IOS as we know it!

From checking the support documents - version 5.25 and its minor version siblings seem to be relegated in a group below 6, 7, 8 and above firmware versions that are easily upgradeable. I think this means that I'm stuck with 5.25 and no IOS. As you say the flash memory sounds real small too.

Cheers,

Andy

For the purposes of a CCNA you will do just fine with the simulator programs in out in the world. There are really not that many questions that relate to CLI Catalyst commands. The CCNP Switching test has a lot more, and compares the IOS and CLI oses for the different switches.
