Hi,
I was looking for some input on my new build.
Its going to be used for video editing/rendering, some gaming and viewing porn ;p
I want to spend $750-$900USD(No monitor, no software). I'm planning to buy everything this weekend. Open to overclocking, but not required...

So far I've picked the components listed below, but please feel free to suggest different ones instead.

Thanks,

Try this:
1/20/2013 update:
i5 3570K + ASRock Z77 Pro3 combo $287 AP
G.Skill DDR3 1600 $44
PowerColor 7970 $360 AR
Corsair Neutron 128GB $120
Seagate 1TB $70 AP
Lite-ON DVD Burner $18
Rosewill Hive 650W $80
NZXT Source 220 $50
Total: $1029 AR AP

- The trick to using the Newegg gift cards is to place one order for the items with gift cards, wait until they email you the code (usually after the charge your CC), then place another order using the gift card codes.
- There is a dual-fan 7850 2GB available for $185 AR and a dual-fan 7950 3GB available for $300 if you want to spend less but still get very good gaming performance
- If you intend to OC (the system is capable) grab an aftermarket HSF like the budget Hyper 212 EVO for $25 AR or the mid-range Xigmatek Dark Knight II for $52.

But drop down to a 7950.

Hey,
Thanks for the response, any reason in particular to go with that CPU over the AMD8350? The AMD is cheaper and scores much better on the benchmarks.

PassMark measures performance in PassMark, nothing else. Do not use it as a guide to what performance you can expect in actual applications. Use anandtech bench instead. i5-3570K is faster in any application that runs on four or fewer threads, which is the vast majority of applications. Video editing, especially professional tools, does tend to be heavily multithreaded, however.

The best of both worlds: Xeon E3-1230 V2. It retains the high performance core but it's hyperthreaded so performance in heavily multithreaded apps is comparable to that of i7-3770K. The downsides: you can't overclock it and it lacks integrated backup graphics. But it only costs as much as an i5-3570K.

 PassMark is a set of completely synthetic benchmarks (mostly integer) that scale perfectly with core count (ok, really integer execution unit count). It's not really indicative of performance in a real world app.

 to the E3-1230 V2 + H77 Pro4/MVP if overclocking is not of interest.

I kind of like the Toms Hardware Site because you can select just a few processors. You can select also specific programs or games to run. So select the programs you plan on running. The synthetic benchmarks arent real world tasks.

Thanks for all the replies. After following up on your suggestions, I think I'm going with the 3770k. What <$50 heat sink would you suggest for overclocking this chip, and which mother board should i pair with it? Was thinking GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-D3H LGA or GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3. I also found the Samsung 256GB 840pro SSD on sale @ Newegg today so I bought that as well as the Fractal Design Define R4 case. 500W for the power supply will be more than enough I hope, correct?
Thanks again, for all the replies.
I still haven't figured out the avatar, I think it is related to post count.

I think you're better off getting a $230ish Xeon, no cooler, and a better video card, since at sub-$100 you're basically stuck at a 7750. It'll be a better balanced system.

Just for gaming. But you're gaming on 1080p right? The 7750 is not a fast card for 1080p. You should get at least a 7850 if you want a decent experience in modern demanding games.

Based on your OP it seems overclockability is less important than gaming, yet you want to spend about $150 more (3770k vs xeon) just to be able to overclock? Make no mistake, the Xeon is fast, you won't be disappointed in its performance. But you may be disappointed in a 7750.

To increase foot traffic and hope you buy other things they sell in the store. The Micro Center near me puts candy and stuff near the cashier registers to lure into grabbing that stuff.
