Well my toner ran out last week, and it started to print the whole page dark but you could make out the text. Now i got toner replacements and its still doing this. Its printing dark lines in the background, it looks like a bad photocopy.

Any help ideas?

its a brother hl 1040

Laser scanner is going bad. I am sure there is another name for it. But that happened with one of mine. It was 80% of the cost of a new one to fix.

The xerographic drum (probably green) is toast.

You might lucky with a can of air, blow all of the toner out of the image transfer area.

If the ROS were bad his defects would be different . . . series of black lines spaced between areas of normal print, or a totally black page with no print visible. Laser machines are "white write"; the laser draws the area without text onto the drum in narrow scan lines.

why do people have to make it an issue if its a wrong forum??? can someone explain that?

i post something in the correct forum it takes days to get a response, i post it in OT where everyone goes and i get the exact answer i needed.

some people either need a drink or to get laid, not waste their lives making sure people know they posted in the wrong forum

Very possable. I have never been a lazer man, I just talked with the Tech. He seemed to know what he was doing, so I took his word for it :) It was my work's printer anyway. :) He said it was that, I told my boss, along with the repair cost, we get new printer. Oh well.

Sometimes. Unfortunately I don't think that this would have qualified as a highly technical question to some of the snobs in there. :p I'd like to see some of THEM describe the xerographic process . . . but anyhoo. ;)

IT IS the wrong forum but personally I could care less.

Do you own the HL-1040 or 1440?

heres the update.........

I cleaned everything. It didnt work.

So i plan to buy a new drum for $140. Figure its cheaper than buying a new printer, and the last drum was good for 6 years so hopefully it lasts that long again.

I want to upgrade the memory in the printer, it has 2mb right now. Where do i find and what kind of memory do i buy for this printer? Know any sites that explain installing it on this model? I've been searching for a while, and cant find much.

Any and all help is appreciated.

The user's manual for your printer says that you can't add more memory to it.
