Help with my HD

OK, I have an external HD. And Windows XP all of a sudden gives an error message "H:/ is corrupt run CHKDSK." And since that time, my H:/ (the external HD), has been unaccessible. Is there any way to save my drive? When trying to open that directory I get the error message "H:/ is not accessible" "The file or directory is corrupt and inaccessible"

Have you tried running CHKDSK, as the error suggests? Open up a command prompt and type "chkdsk h: /r" (without the quotes, of course). It will take a while to run but it might allow you to browse the drive again.

You should also run a lower-level diagnostic program on the drive to determine if the drive has developed physical errors. Download Ultimate Boot CD, burn it to disc and boot from the Ultimate Boot CD, it has numerous manufacturer's HDD diagnostics as well as several good third-party HDD diagnostic tools.

After running chkdsk, I got this back "The type of file system is NTFS." "Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK was aborted." Anything else you might know of to try?
