Help with my First Build

sujeshkappani

Junior Member
I wud like to build a new system with nice configurations so i cud use it for some years. Since it is my first build i need advices from pros and experts.

The processor i wud go for is
Intel Core i7 3rd 3770K 1155 socket
Mobo Intel DZ77GA-70K/Asrock
Cooler Master HAF 912 Combat
WD Caviar green 2TB+samsung 830 series 64 GB ssd
Corsair H100i cooler
PSU???
samsung DVD burner/ a blueray if req.
G.skill ripjawsX DDRe 16GB (2*8)
and sometimes a 2Gb graphics card in future if req.

i play games like crysis, Biohazard, test drive, but I'm not a hard core gamer, i wud like to run a lot of VMs(like MAC osX), rendering works, Office works, run solid edge, catia, MS share point, and even windows server 2012 as OS,unlimited downloading time(as bandwidth is slow). Sometimes i never shutdown my pc for days, tat's y i opted for H100i.
the intel board is optional. Heard about some issue with the Asrock board as there is no good service outlets near my home, been using some branded desktop with intel boards which had no issue. So should i opt for intel above said board or some other brand,?
Does the above combination meet my needs?
How much watts powered PSU should i need for smooth functioning?
Wat about the ups selection?
i buy all these products from online (Flipkart) as they seem cheaper, and as there is no great option around here.
Guide me regarding the PSU issue and UPS if possible.
Thanx,.

You need a decent video card ASAP.

Why does leaving the PC on for days lead to an H100i? Unless you're going to want to put powerful fans on it for a high overclock, it's pointless. Running workstation applications, doing that itself would be risky.

Probably not.

That depends. Assuming a midrange video card, and no overclocking, probably 200-250. But it's nice to have some headroom, to keep the PSU from being near its limits.

Wat about the ups selection?
No idea, personally.

Were are you buying, what's the budget, and what's the usage
Sorry regarding that. I'm buying from india through an online shopping site called flipkart. The budget is between 1000 - 1200$ (70K-80K in my country).
casual gaming, more rendering and VMs, and some designing with cad n solid edge.

can u suggest a budget video card for my usage?

what should i include, more and what to be removed?
In here the temp may rise to 40deg+ during summer

OK, well, first, if it gets that hot, a good case is a must, and it must not be placed either in a cubby, under a desk, or right against a wall. And, keeping your CPU cool is dependent upon keeping the inside of the case cool. The HAF 912 isn't bad, but it's also not great. Taking time to get cables as out of the way as possible should be considered mandatory.

Based on what they have listed, the Corsair 500R, 400R, and Bitfenix Merc Alpha are good choices. The 400R and 500R perform well with positive pressure, and the 500R's big side panel fan would be ideal. The 400R and 500R both, unusually, perform really well with the side as intake, and top or rear as exhaust (with most cases, the side fans are usually wasted, unless using multiple video cards).

So, if they get things back in stock quickly, or actually answer questions from potential customers, see when they expect the 500R and 400R back in stock (if the 500R will be back in stock soon, wait for it, IMO).

For a CPU cooler, the DeepCool Iceblade Pro looks like a good choice to me. It's almost as good as the Noctua ND-H14, with the included fan. CLC will be able to cool a little better, but they're still not risk and maintenance free, and they won't save you from needing good case cooling.

What voltage you have at your outlets? The Seasonic SS600BT looks like a stand-out PSU to me, but it's ~240V only.

Here's what I came up with:
Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H Motherboard (7093)
Intel Core i5-3570 (14952)
2x Transcend JetRam DDR3 8 GB PC RAM (JM1600KLH-8G) (7520)
Seasonic ECO 600 600 Watts PSU (4341) - 600W so it's never going to be stressed much, and the price is right from a good maker, not because you'll ever get close to that
Deepcool Ice Blade Pro CPU cooler (3047)
Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 TI 1 GB GDDR5 Graphics Card (11162) OOS
Samsung 840 Series 250 GB SSD (12053)
Seagate Barracuda 2 TB Desktop Internal Hard Drive (6075)
Samsung SH-224DB/IDDS DVD Burner (1058)

So that's Rs. 67,301, not including a case (price unknown on the 500R).

I think the i7 costs too much more for too little benefit. If you want to spend more and get one, go for it, but don't expect 30% more performance from it.

If you could find an Asus or Gigabyte GTX 650 Ti 2GB for 12000-14000 Rs, that would be an ideal light gamer card that aught to also work well with pro software, and offer known-great stock cooling. Flipkart didn't have any nice middle-ground Geforces like that, though.

The bigger SSD and faster HDD will provide plenty of room to work with on the SSD, and a much speedier HDD for what won't be on it. 64GB is only OK for very light use, and/or if you reboot your PC all the time. Almost all non-OS IO with a 64GB will need to go to the HDD, largely negating the benefits of the SSD.

Now, another option might be to get an 840 Pro 128GB (non-pro has much slower write performance), partition it MBR, with a smaller-than-whole size (80GB, maybe?) in Windows 7, or with GParted, aligned (Windows 7 will automatically do it, and GParted defaults to 1MB or 2MB alignment), leaving the end of the drive as empty space (to help reduce long-term drive wear, and maintain performance easier), and then use it as an ISRT cache. Average performance would be right in between the SSD and HDD (SSD performance for a cache hit, HDD performance for a miss), but how big something was wouldn't matter, anymore, and you would just have 1 logical drive.

Thanks for such a budget built. Since this is my first build got some queries regarding some of the selections here.

Regarding the mobo, will that be enough for some long time usage? or should i opt for extreme edition,? correct me if i'm wrong!🙄
The PSU is just suited for me. The power supply over here is 230-250v 50hz.
The Transcend jet RAM,HDD,SSD, DVD burner are all awesome selection, as i haven't used any SSD before, its you, tat better know the specific advantages.
Regarding processor i prefer to stick to i7 3770K, even 30% more performance is a great benefit for me. Later after 3-4 years when i sell this system it would sometimes provide me more resale value, since it has got 8mb cache.
Very much interested in 500R, and i wud contact flipkart asking about the product availability.
The Graphics 650GTX Ti is only available in Zotac and for asus or Gigabyte i suppose! Can GT would do my works?

No. It's only MicroATX, which isn't ideal (the case will be full ATX), but the prices I was seeing for quality full ATX ones was substantially higher. I can't guarantee I didn't miss anything, though. OTOH, adding lots of cards is a rare thing to do, these days, so it's not a big deal.

Since VMs can take up quite a bit of room, do some research as to whether you'd want SRT or not. With a sizable cache, basically everything you will have used in the past several days, that hasn't been an obvious low-bandwidth stream, will be in the cache, giving a hefty speed boost, without having to fuss with what goes on the OS drive, and what goes on the data drive. The catch being that you won't get the same speed as using the SSD by itself, since cache misses can be 100x slower than hits, and the software managing the cache adds some performance overhead. Also, note that you don't really need such a big cache size as I've said, so much as it is that most SSDs don't have all the channels filled for ~60GB sizes, so the performance is far better (sometimes 2x read and write) with the next sizes up. It's not coincidence that most review sites only get the 120GB and up sizes.

The thing about the size of the SSD just as an OS drive is that with 16GB of RAM, Windows will need >40GB of it, if you leave hibernate on, and will be close to needing 30GB with hibernate off, and the space needed will grow over time, as you add programs. So you can generally figure the space you can use is around the SSD's size -30GB, as a fair estimate. You can remove features, move the page file (dumb idea), and other tricks, but you'd end up with a better system just by getting a bigger one.

The Graphics 650GTX Ti is only available in Zotac and for asus or Gigabyte i suppose! Can GT would do my works?
The 650 Ti is a nice gaming card for the money, that also should work OK for pro apps. Without gaming, a GT 640 would probably be as high as you'd want to go.

Good to know more Info about this. As you said decided to stick to the 650Ti but only Zotac Nvidia GTX 650 Ti is available to my budget?

Regarding SSD, i really dreamed of SSD but the budeget is going out of reach, as the 500R wud cost nearly 9000INR (155$)

Wat about 400R (costs 112$) , but both are unavailable !

If the 500R ends up that high from Flipkart, that is a bit much. I'm used to it being $100-120 (USD).

Can you see when they'll get them back in stock? The Bitfenix Merc Alpha (USB 3.0 version, since you'll have a header) will cool as well, but is a cheap (as in cheaply made, too) case, and you'd want to add 1 or 2 fans, on top of what it comes with. When I looked, they didn't have any of those three in stock--only the Merc Alpha w/ USB 2.0 ports.

Are there other places you would order from? There are other cases that offer excellent cooling out there, those are just the best I could find at Flipkart at prices that weren't crazy high (though in the 500R's case, price unknown).

Over in India Flipkart seem to something reliable source of online shopping. Ebay is there, but i find ebay mostly charges more than Flipkart. Amazon has just started their online shopping site not yet started with Electronic items, https://www.amazon.in/
Other choices are i've to find dealers here which i think sometimes cost more even if there is bit price reduction on the stuff. Since most of them are imported to here, they costs too. BitFenix seems to be an indian made tat's y it cheap.

and
Seasonic ECO 600 (600watts) PSU

http://www.flipkart.com/seasonic-eco-600-watts-psu/p/itmddqq8fzptyfds?pid=PSUDDQPPKBFD8FGV

provides ATX 12v Version and EPS 12v Version will tat suite my gigabyte micro ATX? Since its a new built some clarifications needed.

Should i add Deepcool Ice Blade Pro CPU cooler if i am able to get 500R, as there are 4 fans for the cabinet, + stock processor cooler.?

Since most of them are imported to here, they costs too. BitFenix seems to be an indian made tat's y it cheap.
It's cheap over here, too. That particular case is just made cheap. Many cases that offer good cooling also tend to be build sturdier, made to be quieter, have removable HDD cages, HDD rails, cable routing spaces, etc., so you're paying for a lot more than just the thermal performance. Many cheap cases tend to use older designs, and/or just seem to be thrown together with little/no thought, and/or are going for being compact more than anything else. The Bitfenix Merc Alpha has proven excellent thermals, but in every way is like other $50 cases.

See if you can find when/if they expect it back in stock. With the price of the Corsairs being that much, don't bother with them (it's pushing the budget more than I was thinking it should). They're good cases, but I'm used to them being 20-30% cheaper (I can get the 500R for $120 up front, $95 after rebate, FI, right now). They have the USB 2.0 Merc Alpha in stock, but it just seems silly to make a new computer and not have front USB 3.0 ports.

The Deepcool Iceblade looks like a good fan to get 2 of (either negative pressure with 1xrear+2xtop exhausts, or maybe balanced 1xrear+2xfront or 1xrear+1xbottom+1xfront). It's got LEDs, but ironically, the ones that don't cost more.

Seasonic ECO 600 (600watts) PSU

That just means the +12V "P4" connector has 8 pins. It will either be two 4-pin connectors that snap together, or an 8-pin and 4-pin both at the end. Your motherboard won't use the other 4 pins, but some do, and it will work fine.

Also, one thing you could always do as far as the SSD goes, is get an SSD now, and then an HDD later, instead of spending on both right now, if you're set on the SSD. A 250GB Samsung 840 aught to be a liveable amount of space for awhile.

P.S. I did not see this motherboard, before:
http://www.flipkart.com/msi-zh77a-g...YZ39&ref=f99c1674-1182-4347-9a1e-8242643fb3e7
An extra fan header (3 chassis+1 CPU), so all chassis fans could use the mobo control (quieter when idle, faster and louder when loaded), more slots, cheaper, and no apparent signs of D-Paks.
http://www.flipkart.com/gigabyte-ga...HRGM&ref=f99c1674-1182-4347-9a1e-8242643fb3e7
Interesting GB board for slightly more, but does not support SRT, if you want to try that.

The GB wouldn't have shown up the first time, since I was probably only looking at H or Z boards, but I swear that MSI wasn't there when I first looked...

If cooling is enough of a concern that you were thinking about going water, yes. The stock cooler should do the job, but the temps might get really toasty if the room temp gets over 40C.

The temp problem usually come up during Feb-May, those days are too hot as people outside used to get sunburns due to 40+deg. Now its rainy season from june to Oct. So i would go for the cabinet which flipkart said will be available soon enough ( i suppose) as its high from local shops some other online shoppers.

Read the hyper threading of i7 is just a waste in games. Is it worth while using some pro apps?? or MS server 2012?
Does the heat generated by graphics card (650GTX Ti-boost 2GB) and the RAM 16GB could spread up the heat over the motherboard?? and cause probs? GB are experts, but does that heat harm in long time usage?

You mentioned rendering. 3D rendering is does get fair boosts from HT, but that's probably going to be all that you'll do that will. Being the fastest desktop chip they offer, Intel gets much more of a premium for the 2 i7 models per gen than they are worth, for most users.

Long-term, yes, heat degrades it. Heating and cooling cycles, and how hot things get during those heating and cooling cycles, greatly affect longevity.

However, no, the heat does not spread (well, technically, the RAM's does, but only over the DIMM itself, they are designed to do that, and all the heatspreaders are really just for looks, anyway). With the open video card coolers (as opposed to radial blowers that blow directly out of the case), they will heat up air in the case as they cool the video card. Same with the CPU cooler. But, the case fans are there to move that air out of the case, before it can be re-used as warmer intake air for those coolers.

Personally, I'm biased towards GB, and still have decade-old systems with low-end GB boards running just fine, but I can't say it's 100% rational 🙂.

The 500R is available, but it says it cannot be shipped to my location.D:
The GB boards as they say, has got gold caps, and review is also nice, the new msi is suited for OC.
Both H77s support amd cross fire but not sli ( i'm not gonna add up any more graphics i suppose:wub🙂
of the msi more OCs, has got no intention regarding OCs, as none of us has complained, that my system is too fast. ever.!
But in the sometimes in the future, don't know. As haswell doesn't support none of the above boards, if i feel like selling it may get some cash. So?

The reasonable SSD i find is below,
http://www.flipkart.com/samsung-840...120bw/p/itmdhwymqtah96pg?pid=IHDDHWYABREGBTAB
But i find its not pro series as it will seriously delay, and wud equal the speed of 7200rpms!

As a monitor i had an intention to go for Dell touch, but it costs 18k as best buy. So trying to go for some 3D HP
http://www.flipkart.com/hp-2311gt-3...a805d8&srno=t_1&otracker=from-search&query=3d
The rating isn't soo good, but some times help me in movie rendering and some games as both Mobo and gfx suport 3d.
Don't know whether the card has some prob with compatibility issue with monitor.
Its not IPS but TN.! Display will not be that good.

Flipkart doesn't appear to have anything Haswell, yet, so no idea, there. However, you could just keep the PC for a few years. Haswell isn't much faster now, and even if programs you use take advantage of AVX2, it's not like this system will have gotten slower from it.

Er, many times that of a 7200 RPM HDD. 120 would do. Definitely don't go smaller, though, because managing the space on SSD will just be too tedious.
