Doing a memory upgrade with an old FIC sd11. Instead of getting two 256mb sticks. I went on and got one 512mb stick and installed it and now when i turn computer on it says checking nvram. I there anyway I can go into CMOS and change settings to get the 512mb stick to work or do I have to goand get two 256mb sticks (more expensive). My board accepts upto 768mb of memory. But is this too much for one slot? Help would be greatly appreciated.

well if it completes nvram ok ..then it proceeds to check for drives..does it..? uhoh..which revision(pcb number) is it..? fic sd11 grab your pcb number compatibility pdf..appears these mobos only like up to 256mb pc100 sticks(ecc will work..pc133 maybe..older sticks most likely)

it says "checking nvram......update ok" but then does nothing. I had a bad memory stick so I upgraded, but the bad memory will at least boot to CMOS or begin to start OS. The new one won't I was checking the kingston site and it said for my board the highest they recommended was 256mb I was hoping there was a way I could get around that isssue if not. I'll have to return it.

you've gotta find out how your RAM module is manufactured, when it comes to density banks, a memory might be done with x4 x2 x8 or x16 banks, some mainboards have issues supporting a density of x4, this often happens in very large modules, like 512MB or 1GB. Read the Mainboard's manual, just to make you sure

yes..return it :( ..sad to say but with price of memory(SDram=higher priced) ..an upgrade to a ddr-based mobo/cpu/ram can be around $200 .. mobo socket a=$58 from newegg(an35n ultra)..ram pc2700/3200 512mb module for about $70 to $80..a retail pkg XP2000+ is $57 but the bad is if your vid card is 1.5v it would need to be upped as well..gl either way :)
