Help with Memory

Hi,

I am just about to upgrade my system memory. Thing is, it's been quite a while since I built my PC and don't remember what is in there.

Is there a tool available where I can check what memory I have installed, so any new memory I purchase is compatible.

I'm pretty sure they're DDR PC3200, 2x 256MB sticks. I have 3 slots available and would like to buy an additional GB.

I just want to check that that is the memory that is in there using some sort of tool (there was no indication when inspecting the memory) and also check that I can just buy a 1GB stick and upgrade to 1.5GB with my two 256mb sticks that are currently in there. I don't have to buy two 512MB sticks and mirror, like with memory of old?

Check your CMOS to see the speed of your memory clock.

PC2100 = 133 MHz x 2 = 266 MHz
PC2700 = 166 MHz x 2 = 333 MHz
PC3200 = 200 MHz x 2 = 400 MHz

Or you could just look at the RAM. 🙂

Looked at the RAM - zilch written on there telling me what it is! 🙂

And, can I just buy a 1GB stick and add it to my two 256MB sticks (I have 3 DDR bays)?

That depends on whether your motherboard can handle that combination. When all else fails, RTFM. 😎

😛 too true too true. so your RAM has no sticker thing on it saying what size it is or anything? does it have a model #? do you have the original box? for the 1gig, check your mobo manual to see if it can handle 1 gig sticks
