The prob is that I can send mail just fine, but I cannot recieve mail.

I tried using Netscape since I used it years ago, but would get a rejected password, so I have uninstalled it for now. I'm using Kmail and I don't get any error messages, but I don't recieve mail.

any idea where I may have gone wrong with the set up?

What configurations do you have setup now? Do you need ssl support? pop3 or IMAP? You sure you have the correct account and server in there?

Check your mailbox setting. Assuming you are running sendmail is it looking for
/var/spool/mail/<username> ?

POP is what I have always used and what I have set to now. In windows it is POP3 but I don't get the option to put the 3 in with Kmail.
As for servers I tried with just mail, and also with mail.attbi.com with the same result.

I thought if I used the same configuration setting that I use in Windows it should work. same server,ports,POP3 etc: is this correct or do I need to configure differently in this OS ?
I have never paid attention to the SSL settings but I will check that.

freebsddude, I wasn't using send mail. but I tried it. But their is no username in /var/spool/mail/ , the folder is empty . So how do I get a username in to this?

and thanks for the tips guys..........considering wiping this all out and starting over with a clean install leaving out the stuff I won't be using for now.

I guess I am not sure, but (a) are you running a mail server on your machine, or (b) using an ISP directly with your email client.

Regardless, in the Sending Mail section, choose SMTP and put the hostname of the outgoing mail server or an IP address, that might help.

Good Luck!

Oh Duh, I had entered my Mandrake username as the login name and not the login name for my mail server..........It works now that I changed that.

Feel silly? I hope so. It will make you pay closer attention in the future. I do silly things like this all the time. :)

*Just in case you were thinking this was a flame, it was not. I do silly things all the time and atleast triple check my settings now :)
