So my parents are getting me a laptop for my birthday and I need help on choosing. Im looking for a good mix of portability and power. First of all I need to know what processor would be the best choice. Im looking for something fairly fast but not so big that i get tired of carrying it at school. Also I don't know much about graphics. Im not a big gamer but I would like to be able to play newer games without having much difficulty. Im currently looking at customizing a Dell or a HP. Here are my desktop specs so you can see what I am used to:

AMD XP1800+
Chaintech 7NJS
512 DDR 266
ATI 9000pro
120gb 7200rpm HDD

I would like to have this computer for about 2 years untill I finish college. Let me know your recommedations. Also I would like to stay under $1500.

Thanks alot

Brian

just make sure you get a Pentium M, and not a Pentium 4-M.
the Dell D600 seems like a good one. Also, you should look at the IBMs. Either a T41 or T42, but just be warned that they are fairly expensive.

I would recommend the Emachines M6809. It should have PLENTY of power for what you'll want to do. The price is $1649.99 with a a total of $250 in mail-in rebates making it $1399.99. This is at Best Buy so you might want to check it out and see what you come up with. :)

I've been looking at the M6809 very closely. I now want to know how the the Athlon 64 processors compare with the new Pentium-M's. Both are new processors and look very promising. But which one would be better in the long run.

Thanks

The athlon 64 is going to be a faster than the pentium-m. But you'll get about 2 hours of battery life with the AMD64. The pentium-m will get about double or even triple (I get about 6 hours on my R40) depending on the brand.
