Help with Installing WIN98

Hi
I know its a scrub question, but i am trying to do a fresh install of win98. I reformatted my IBM HDD and booted off the bootdisk with cD rom support. i got into DOS and all.. but when i typed in E:\setup. it says "this needs microsoft windows" what am i doing wrong? i can see the CD in DOS too but i cant get it to setup. please help

If you enter install windows with cd-rom support, it should automatically start. It's not a scsi cd is it? If so, you would need to install scsi drivers first.

If you can't get it to work, go into your bios and select first boot device as cd-rom. Let it install from the cd.

It is a bootdisk, not a startup, right?

If you do

dir

you will find an exe file called install, so type

install

and it should start yes.

I have had some trouble from time to time and repartitioned with FDISK just to clear all.
No question is scrub when it comes to Win98...

actually yeah i do have SCSI CD. but i borrowed my friend's IDE DVD to install Win98. By bootdisk i mean the startup floppy i made from windows. i will go ahead and try E:\install thanks for the response

If you're in DOS and you can read the C/D Rom drive, copy the
cab files to the harddrive and install from there.....

if you start with cd support &amp; you reach the A: prompt, you the switch drives to your cd drive letter but up 1 letter ie if your cd drive is D type in E: &amp; press enter. you should now be at the E: prompt so type in setup &amp; with your windows cd in drive, press enter! the OS should then start loading!
this only works if your cd drive can use the generic windows drivers.

that is exactly what i did. it just gives me this error messege &quot; this needs microsoft windows&quot; but anyways i am at work now and will try again once i get home.

you are using a full win98 cd &amp; not an upgrade cd, aren't you ? 😕

Might be your boot disk. Try doing the bios thing if your MB supports it and boot from the CD.
Are you using the boot disk that came with the w98 package? If not go to another comp using w98 and make a new boot disk.
I have had this happen when using a w95 boot disk, hmm but that doesnt give the option to start with cdrom support. If you need the boot disk i can send you a copy of all the files from mine. NOt sure if that will help, but hey it might.
