I keep getting the error "Invalid argument" when I try and make cd images. I don't want to have to carry around or us some of them since it's hard on battery life and it's much more convienient to just mount the images.

Does anyone have any clue how to fix this? I asked here becuase this seems to be the most active mac forums here 🙂

Thanks!

This is what I did to make an image of a CD for a test. I opened disk utility. The CD that you have mounted on the desktop should be on the side bar of disk utility. Click the cd on the side bar, then click New Image at the top of the disk utility. When you do this, a dialogue box will come up. Name the image whatever you like, change the image format to whatever you please, and if you want to encrypt it, go ahead and do so. Click Save. The image should be saved to where ever you saved it. Double click the image, and it will mount a disk image onto your desktop.

That's what I tried to do before... but I picked read only for the type of image...I fixed it buy using DVD/CD master, but it makes a .cdr instead of .dmg..... I wonder why I can't seem to make dmg's

Thanks

Hi dave,

I also got the "invalid argument" error when trying to make the dmg. I was making the disk image with read only, but when I changed it to read/write, it worked.

Did you try with read/write?

Hmm. I just tried even with the read/write option and the DVD/CD option, and I cannot get it to work. I'll post back with more info to see if I can figure this out.

Ok, the reason I couldnt get it to make an image first was that I was using an Ubuntu Linux CD. So I tried with the original Software Restore CD that came with my eMac, and it worked, using the read/write option. You should give the read/write option a try.

Not sure what the difference between a .cdr and a .dmg though.

EDIT: Ok, I see that you got it working. Thats good. 🙂
