Hi everyone, I am a total newbie, but here is my situation. I have my dsl setup like so (and it works)...DSL -> ServerPC (in NIC #1) -> Out (NIC #2) to PC #2 (my roommates PC, using DHCP to get IP addy via a cross overcable). Everythign works great and he gets like 192.168.0.2 and I am 192.168.0.1.

My other roomie wants in so I bought this Linksys 8 port hub, but am having some problems with it. I removed the crossover cable that was coming out of NIC #2 and replaced it with a standad patch cable directly into the hub(into the uplink port) then I ran another standard patch cable from the port #1 in the hub to his Computer - however, now he can't seem to get an IP address? I ma not sure what all is going on....can anyone help!??!?! Thanks in Advance!!

just a thought, sometimes hub's have a switch you have to throw to make sure the uplink port is truly an uplink and not just another output port...you might want to double check that.

also, i'd suggest your roomy not use DHCP, just manually set his IP to 192.168.0.2 and set his gateway to your second NIC's ip (192.168.0.1)

just some thoughts...

cool - thanks for the reply - I can't seem to find a switch for making it an uplink port? does anyone else have insight how to do this? also, He can't seem to ping my NIC 192.168.0.1 from his machine when everything is hooked up. hmmmmmmmmmm - maybe this is it? the link/Acct light seems to be flashing on the hub? could that be it?

now from the client machine if I try to even ping my machine (the 192.168.0.1) address I get DESTINATION HOST UNREACHABLE? also the blinking on the hub is consistently 5 blinks then it stops/pauses?

anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!!

well, i did say only SOME hub's have that switch..i guess you're doesn't...so that's one less thing to worry about for troubleshooting i suppose!

have you tried not using DHCP yet? I think that's really key. keep fiddling around, and maybe someone else will come along and have some more insight.

hmmm - I wil lgive that a shot - interestingly enough I gues maybe that using a direct cross over connection will allow me to use DHCP, but maybe using a Hub in between the two makes me actually specify the gateway and ip address of the client machine....

anyone else know? you guys rock here! also...

what should the subnet be if I specify the IP Address of the client machine? 255.255.255.0?

cool - thanks - I got it all setup on my client PC, but still I can't seem to ping the server (192.168.0.1) from the client... I know that addy is good b/c from the server I can ping 192.168.0.1 and get a response, but it just times out from the client - and the flashing light on the hub, hmmm - and I am using 2 patch cables inbetween the hub and the 2 pcs??? thanks for your help!

anyone else - am I missing something???

well, i started this with you, so i'd like to help you try to finish it. here's a couple more ideas. don't worry i'm going to dinner soon so this is my last reply for now. :p

1) you DON'T need to use the uplink portion of the hub. just plug both cables into the center two ports of the hub, and you avoid any uplink needs

2) what OS? see if you can see each other in network neighborhood

3) put it back the way you had it (w/out the hub) if this doesn't work, to double check that nothing else has changed

if it works w/out the hub, then adding a hub dss(with both cables plugged into the center two ports) would only make it NOT work if the cables or HUB were defective.

good luck

You are talking about the 8 port hub not the Linksys router with 8 port hub, right? If it?s the hub try what sohcrates suggests, the way you have it set up you don?t need to use the uplink port in fact the only time you should use the uplink port is to connect another hub, switch or router.
