Help with HP p6347

Homerboy

Lifer
I was given a HP Pavilion p6347

AMD 630 x4
6GB DDR
etc

When I tried to power it up -- nothing.
Open the case.
MB has power (green LED).
tried different PSU
CPU and case fan spun up, then the PSU sparked and smoked (this was an old generic PSU I had laying around and hadn't been used for 2+ years)
Tried a known working Antec 480w modular PSU and I'm back to the same green LED and nothing else.

Do you think it's the a blown MB?
Any other ideas?

I'm just trying to resurrect this machine as an extra PC for the kids to putz around on. So I'm willing to invest SOME money, but not a whole lot.

Thanks in advance.

Test the power supply It might be just giving enough power to turn on the LED but nothing else.

remove everything from MB then just attach the power supply.
turn pc on with the stuff missing. Does it beep error codes?
If it beeps then so far so good.
at this step now turn back off and now add memory. turn back on still beeping? If so then so far so good.
Now add the hard drive and turn it back on. still beeps? so far soo good and keep adding until it stops beeping and acts dead.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I should have pointed out that nothing except memory and CPU is plugged in at this time.

Check for leaking/bulging capacitors. Reseat CPU and RAM. Try with one stick of RAM. Try with different stick. Maybe faulty mobo.

Yeah it was dead when I got it. That's why it was given to me. Figured I could take a stab at bringing it back to life for a (nearly) free PC.

Well the board is going for about 80 bucks on ebay.

The reaction to the first power supply tested blowing up and the second doing nothing makes me think there might be a short somewhere. Also makes me wonder if the original power supply is ok.
But it is always a good idea to try a clear cmos as well.
Have you tried different RAM?
Might also want to try manually shorting the pins for the start button to rule that out.

PS - If you haven't already, unplug that card reader.

Yeah. Already dug around on eBay for a replacement. I think I'd end up getting a board from newegg or the like instead.

Unplugged all ram, card reader.... Everything but CPU.
Going to unseat MB from case to rule out short.

Any suggestions on MB? would have to fit in the BTX case...

Yeah
Removed MB from case and same thing.

Green LED on MB. when I hit power button nothing happens at all. It couldn't be the power button itself?!

BTX? dead for a while now. I still have a working 775 board. Probably need to throw it in the trash really. Good idea IMO, but didn't catch on.

uATX may prove to be just as difficult though, outside of the Foxconn board. Does that case look like it would carry a Micro ATX?

Could be. Like I said, short out the connection on the board and see. I will say that I have seen plenty of HP/Compaq's where that stupid light was as bright as can be, but the board and/or power supply was still dead.

I should just be able to get a new mb that fits case and use all the ram CPU etc.

MB follows standard bolt pattern just installed upside down in case.

Ah, yes, it is an inverted ATX case (mounted on the opposite side), not BTX. I understand the confusion. Look at a micro ATX motherboard, specifically dimensions and bolt pattern. I bet it would work.

Fan startup only, then quiet. I tried everything, removing main battery, holding power switch for several seconds to no avail. Dollar General to the rescue with 2 cells for $4.50.

Yeah. I don't even get fans spinning.
The only thing that mages me NOT think it's the MB is that the LED lights up. Never had the light work but the MB be dead.

Hook a 4-pin case fan to the power supply. Should work even if the board is dead.

Yeah I know the PSU I'm using now is good. I don't think that's my problem.

It's a theory:
It would rule out a short that would prevent the power supply from enabling the safety mechanism that kept it from powering on. Your cheap power supply probably didn't have that, which is why is powered up the computer, and promptly died.
