help with HIV/AIDS and sex education in schools

hey all,
i know i don't post on offtopic too often anymore, but when i do, i like to think that they are worthy causes, as i deem this to be. one of my good friends one of my good friends works as an addiction counselor as well as being a sexual education counselor and he alerted me to this problem that seems to be arising. the easiest way to explain it is to let you just read dan's email to me and see the information on the links he provided.

<quote from dan>
i am writing all of you due to the fact that our current administration is headed in a very dangerous direction. Bush and his cronies are slowly and quietly working towards destroying a great deal of progress we have made in this country concerning HIV/AIDS. The administration wants to get rid of condom and any science based prevention education and only teach abstinence till marriage education. I am sending you a few links that have information as well as areas where you can write an email to Dubya and your reps. Please take the time to read the pages and if you feel that abstinence only is somewhat unrealistic please send an email. We need to be heard, and we need to make some noise. Thanx everyone and forward this to everyone you know and think will agree that Bush needs to change his close minded and ignorant view.
Later
Dan

i hope that everyone can realize the problems with the issues presented here and hopefully let your opinions be heard by the people who can do something about them, and not start a flame war on here for it!

thanks!

I love how any opinion different than yours is "close minded and ignorant."

Tell me, what is so "close minded and ignorant" about the cheapest, simplest, and most effective method of birth/disease control available to mankind?

It's pretty stupid to hand them some condoms and tell them it will prevent the contraction of aids, when the latex material is grossly inadequate, we're talking about a fatal disease here... Not to mention other viruses, perhaps the education should focus more on std's.

Research shows that making free condoms available actually DECREASES condom use, because the kids are less likely to be acquiring them from a friend, teacher, or parent who will give advice along with the condom.

Survival of the fittest.

Yea, but teaching abstainance is pointless because people won't do it. Better off to say more along the lines of 'abstainance is best, but this is better than nothing', rather than totally ignoring the protective route.

Both should be taught. Not teaching abstinence is stupid. It's the only prevention method that has worked every time it's tried.

I'm not saying completely ignore protection, but there needs to be more emphasis placed on the only TRULY safe method. It's also free, which is a very good price.

You're right, but if I read the first post right, they are looking to totally eliminate teaching about protection, which IMO is wrong.

viper, like i said, i'm not trying to start a flame war here, and i do personally believe that more than abstinence should be taught to kids. i do not speak for dan or what he writes in his email, as he is quite opinionated, but i think the best source of evidence is available in the links provided, which basically do say that the avenue bush and his advisors are trying to pursue is to teach nothing except abstinence, and on this point, deeko is correct in saying that no protection methods will be taught. i would hope that all educated people would realize that the best option is to teach what we know, not give only a small part of the information and leave one to figure out the rest on their own.

You need to make it a little more clear that you're quoting someone who's opinions you don't necessarily agree with.

And here I was all prepared to tear you a new one.

if you teach both that almost undermines teaching abstinence though...

I would do it in order of effectiveness (none, pull out, condoms, whatever, and THEN the only truly foolproof method).

ok, so we don't have any disagreement that more than just abstinence should be taught - which is what the whole point of this post is🙂 so in agreeing with that those links should be used and opinions sent to those that can do something about it.

Both is fine, however I don't think a teacher should go in with the attitude of teaching abstinance is useless. There "are" some smart kids out there who can make smartest decision. I don't think anyone can argue with the fact that abstinance is best.
