Help with HD/CD issues (whole system crashes)

I swapped motherboard in my computer because I had Direct3D issues where it crashed to desktop every time I tried some D3D games. With the change that problem is gone but now I have a new problem.

Every time I try to install a game from CD drive to hard drive the whole system crashes and reboots. It also happens when copying a large file from CD to hard drive. For instance BF1942 installation first complains about corrupted media but if I can get it past that it crashes at around 50% of the installation (around where map rfas are installed). Ghost Recon installation also crashes about midway through.

This happens with both my Liteon 4012S CDRW and with LG 16x DVD drive. I replaced all IDE cables with brand new ones. I'm running XP Home.

I'm thinking some IDE setting may be the cause but I'm little unsure what parameters to change. Any help would be appreciated.

Other hardware:
Gigabyte 7ZXE motherboard
Athlon TB 1.4GHz (temps should be okay CPU temp 56C, system temp 29C)
512Mb SDRAM (tested with memtest86, should be okay)
MSI GeForce3Ti200
Seagate Barracuda IV 80Gb
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
3COM 905C LAN card
Antec 430W TruePower

I am not sure what chipset that motherboard uses. But if it is VIA then go download the new 4in1s, and see what happens.

Chipset is Via KT133A. 4in1 version 4.45 is installed.

HD is my primary master and the CD-drives are on secondary IDE.

when you changed the MB, did you do a fresh installation of Windows??

The MS OS'es get a bit.... cranky..... if you change mb's without a new install. things that applied to the old board no longer valid... etc....

Yup, I have a brand new installation of XP. Actually have re-installed it a few times now.

Just noticed that the fault may be somewhere else than I first thought it to be. I got the same problems when trying to install Splinter Cell demo that I downloaded to my hard drive. Starting to install it gives me the same CRC errors as installing BF1942. Also trying to run full scandisk stopped due to: " Cannot open volume for direct access". This is getting weird.

Going to try Seagate's tools next to find if there is something wrong with the HD.

Phew, at last I found out what the problem: 3Com ethernet card. There is some sort of mysterious conflict between it and the IDE channels. There is nothing conflicting according to Windows but I started tearing apart the whole computer and found network card to be the problem. Everything works as it should when the network card is removed and the problems reappear when it is installed.

Funny thing, I can play BF1942 just fine with the network card. It's just installation that doesn't work.
