Help with hard drive

I have an IBM laptop that wont boot. I troubleshot it down to the HDD. Is there a program that I can get this thing to boot up with and try to possibly fix it. I thought there was an old DOS program "check disc" or something that might work. Any help would be appreciated.

if your laptop has a floppy, download drive fitness test from IBM
