I recently bought a Golden gate 40 but the YS tech fan that came with it is much too loud for me to handle (48dB!). So I decided to replace it but im not really sure what fan I should get. im planning on taking my XP1600+ to 2100+ speeds so I need something effective yet quiet. the best that I came up with is this:

if anybody out there has a better reccomendation I'd love to hear it. Also is there anyplace I can get those Panaflo L1A or pabst fans for cheap? thanks.

Get a ThermalTake Smart Fan II if you just want it to do the speed adjust for you. If you want the awesome cool looking version, get the CoolMod version (twice as expensive). Also, nexfan has panaflos for cheap and it's a good company.

I could've swore the Golden Gate 40 was a 60mm hsf combo. hope you don't forget to get an adopter since you linked a 80mm fan.

Personally, I think the the reason why the heatsink performs so well is because of the fan, you slap on a slower fan, performance will go down. hope it works out for you.

also, before bjuying online, check your local surplus/electronic shop for cheap fans. I live in San Jose, HSC is a mile from my work, they have Papst fans for pretty cheap. no box, bare leads. if you don't mind digging through a box of fans, might be worth your while. oh, and they are not pulls, it looks brand new.

The Golden Gate does come with a 60 mm fan, a YS Tech that is horribly loud ... I have NEVER heard that kinda noise from anything other than my neighbors leafblower at full bore. I tried using an 80 mm Zalman case fan with an Akasa 60 to 80 adapter but had nearly disastrous results due to its slow rpm speed. I'm in the process of replacing the Golden Gate and the 60 mm fan with something ... leaning towards the Volcano 7+ at this point for a 1600+ and hoping for a mild OC from that combo. I'd guess my db was well above 48 when I got it going so I was not very pleased with the results.

Getting a slower fan will raise your cpu temp,so don't be surprised.I used one of these on mine & found it gave me a nice compramise between noise & performance.

The golden gate fins are really dense so it needs a pretty strong fan to push the air out.
I had one with a 26cfm ystech fan and it was decent on a 1.2 duron.
A very nice quiet 60mm fan is the vantech stealth but it really doesnt push much air.

I found the Volcano 7+ for $25 here: CoolerExpress

This unit features selectable fan speeds from low, median and high so I should be satisfied with the noise and performance at the median setting. The important specs are :
FAN Speed H: 6000 rpm, M:4800 rpm, L:3000 rpm
Max. Air Flow: 49.0CFM
Noise: H 6000rpm@47 dB(A), M 4800rpm@35 dB(A), L 3000rpm@24 dB(A)

You can't eat your pie and have it too...
If you plan to overclock, you need to either deal with the noise or drop some cash for a new HSF. I would recommend AX-7 is you want a low noise solution.

As a followup to my Golden Gate swap for the Volcano 7+ ..

the Golden Gate was running at 39 c idle, 43 under load and what most disappointed me was the noise. I had completely abandoned this PC and used my others due to the extremely loud 60 mm fan.

the Volcano 7+ is humming (as in *QUIET*) at 35 c idle and 37 under duress. I am very impressed with:
a) the performance, altho an 80 mm fan will beat a 60 under similar circumstances every time.
b) the quiet hum from the PC .. as it SHOULD be. I'm used to a certain amount of hsf noise and this is well within my threshold.

I am actually using the fan set in its "Median" setting, as the Low was as quiet as a whisper and the Full was a touch louder, but still well below what the YSTech fan in the Golden Gate was producing. The measured rpm on that damn thing was well over 8k !!! The Tt at Median is running 5k rpms for comparison. As far as having my cake, my board doesn't offer a 1:5 divider so the highest I will O/C the FSB is about 150 so thats' a non-issue. There's much more left in this 1600+ than my KG7 board will offer. Now if I had bought the KR7 instead .....
