On my trip to the local computer shop, I was going to get some replacemant parts for may (aging) PIII 700 system which recently stopped working. However, once inside, I saw the ASUS P4B533 mobo on the shelf...'nuff said. So, now I have the P4B533, Intel P4 2.2 Ghz and 512 MB DDR333 memory. Nice, eh? The only problem is I can't get it to boot my hard drives from the old system. Keep getting:

While initializing device NDIS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

It won't boot a W98 or W2k disk.

I'm about to format my W98 disk and reinstall W98 unless anyone has any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Ok, this is what I found on the MS knowledgebase:

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Windows Protection Error in NDIS with a CPU That Is Faster Than 2.1 GHz (Q312108)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 95

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you are installing Windows 95 or Windows 98 on a computer that has a CPU that runs at 2.2 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, you may receive the following error message:

While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error

CAUSE
The timing calibration code in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) driver causes a divide by zero if the CPU runs at 2.2 GHz or faster. This problem does not occur with CPUs that run at 2.1 GHz or slower.

RESOLUTION

Windows 98
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

Normal support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name
---------------------------------------------------
28-Nov-2001 11:05 4.10.0.2000 157,909 Ndis.vxd

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

So, I gotta PAY to have this bug fixed? If I'm in the process of installing W98, how do I get this file on the system? Seems like a bootstrapping issue. Looks like I'm gonna have to manually (via dipswitches) adjust the CPU freq multiplier to 21x for a 2.1 Ghz speed until I get this fixed. I think...

Thugsrook,

Thanks for the patch...I knew it was out there...not surprised you had it.

I did a clean install with just a video card, hard drive, cdrom and floppy-no dice. Instead of trying again, I think I'll back down to 2.1 Ghz (or lower) and get up and running first. I'll post when the next event occurs. Thanks.

Ok,

I have manually set the processor speed (JEN set to manual, DSW1 set to 0x11-100Mhz, DSW2 set to 0x20-20x).

I came up in safe mode to replace the ndis.vdx file. This time the system finished booting and completed updating from the W98 install. However, at the login dialog box, the blue screen of death with a 0E exceptio @ address FFFF:FFFFFFFF. ???

This is the response on every boot.

This sux.

DD

Tried replacing my (older) NIC with a (newer) DLINK card - same error...this still sux.

Next thing I'd try is removing the NIC and doing a fresh installation of Windows from CD, preferably Win2k. Good luck!
