Help with DVD Drive

I successfully built my PC last night and almost everything is operating without a problem. My lone remaining issue is my DVD drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...p?Item=N82E16827106057

It's recognized in the BIOS and in WinXP (although Windows recognizes it as a DVD-RAM drive), but when I place a disc in the drive it spins and the busy light comes on...and that's it. I tried updating the firmware from the manufacturer's website and had no luck--upon rebooting the drive simply sat and spun away doing nothing. Any help is, as always, appreciated.

First I tried using this drive to install XP, and the installation got to the point where the GUI appears onscreen at which point I was told it couldn't find the necessary files. I switched to my old CD drive and the install finished fine. I've since tried placing several discs in the drive (audio, program, etc.) and the same thing occurs: it spins, the light stays on, the HDD light comes on, but nothing happens and opening Windows Explorer freezes when looking at the drive. Device manager says everything is functioning properly, however.

Is it possible that dvd drive is on a raid controller, check manual and double check your SATA ports and verify that you have them on a non-raid....something worth checking.
