Need help with dial up prob on win98SE. Computer will automatically attempt to dial up ISP for online connection. It happens in a random fashion and "connect automatically" is not checked.

Have looked at programs running at startup and outlook express and cant seem to find problem...

Any suggestions, I saw a post here some time back about this prob but cant find it now...seems like the suggestions given didn't solve the issue.

Thanks for your time and thoughts

I'd download the free "zonealarm" firewall. Install it, then boot up as normal. It will tell you immediately what program is trying to access the internet and will ask if you want to allow it to do so.

Zonealarm

Try opening your actual startup folder in explorer, and if there is a shortcut to outlook, delete it, and all will be fine there, then go to run/ type in msconfig , then open startup on the top, uncheck anything having to do with the offending app, clik ok, and reboot, that should take care of it.

Seems to be Outlook Express...have disable all and used zonealarm...may have to resort to clean install if not successfull, or just put up with problem..

Thanks to all for their help!

Open Outlook Express and click on Tools/Options and choose the general tab. Midway down that menu you'll see the settings for how often you want to check for messages and there will be a drop down menu below it telling outlook how to handle the connection. I'll bet that it's set to connect even when working offline. Change this to Do not connect and your problem should be solved. This way you'll only receive email when you open outlook manually while connected to the internet.
Hope this works for you.
