Hi all
My PC: Dell Dimension 8250 Pentium4 756Mb ram
My OS: XP 32 SP3
I have made compressed files (eg large spreadsheets, word documents, .exe files, .jpeg) using the Windows utility on my machine, or downloaded from the web. These can be seen fine in Windows Explorer, and I can open individual files from within the compressed folder by double-clicking.
However, when I try to extract the contents of the compressed file using the ?extract file? option, the XP Compressed (Zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard falls over after starting the extraction and the process fails, almost always after having created a new folder and with at most 2 of the files from the compressed folder having been extracted. I get an error message, the Wizard closes, and the blue windows bar at the bottom of the screen disappears for a few seconds then reappears.
I have tried extracting a variety of compressed folders, and different files. Also dragging files individually out of the compressed folder, accepting the default destination folder, creating a new destination folder, all resulting in a crash. I cannot isolate one specific file, or type of file that causes the crash. The only success I have is when a compressed folder contains only one file, when the process works. With more than one file ? crash. I have turned off my antivirus (Norton 2008) but also no effect. Setting my Temp file to encrypted/unencrypted also has no effect. I have not knowingly altered any settings that would cause the extractor to cease functioning?.
The error message I get:
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Error Signature
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512
ModName: officeav.dll
ModVer: 15.5.0.23
Offset: 000055e1
I have a bunch of temp folders here, that contain the abortive extractions:
C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for <compressed file name here>.zip
Would really appreciate any assistance in getting XP?s extractor back on track!
