In my experience if you provide 3 or 4 decent cocktails only the douchiest douche won't find something they like.

I think you might be missing the point of this thread.

The point is you want to be able to make 3-4 quality cocktails with 2 bottles of liquor. This will only happen if you spend $40 on mixers, in which case you should have just bought more liquor.

Yep, seems like that's cheap ass is going to get.

For what it's worth, my suggestions are:

Smirnoff Vanilla Vodka
Bacardi White Rum

Along with these get:

Pineapple Juice
Coke
Pina Colada Mix
Strawberry Daiquiri Mix
Orange Juice
Grenadine

With this you can make:
Pineapply Juice and Vanilla Vodka
Coke and Vanilla Vodka
Rum and Coke
Strawberry Daiquiri
Pina Colada
Rum Punch

I wouldn't call this 3-4 great cocktails but it's the best you can do if you are so cheap you only want to buy 2 bottles.

We're having a house warming party tomorrow night and I want to do some cocktails for the early arrivals. However, I don't want to spend a lot of money due the the fact that buying a house has made me pretty much broke. So in that respect, I want to buy just two bottles of liquor that can make the widest range of cocktails with a bunch of mixers and fruit.

I'm thinking a spirit (probably white rum or vodka) and a liqueur (parhaps Midori or a triple-sec?) - what are the two most versatile bottles I should be buying to do a bunch of nice cocktails? What are everyone's favourite cocktails?
So did the party start yet?

It finished like a day before you asked.

I bought a bottle of Vodka, a bottle of Blue Carucao and a bottle of Triple Sec and made the following cocktails (with required mixers and garnishes):
Cosmopolitan
Sea Breeze
Blue Lagoon
Kamikaze
Vodka Sour

And my sister gave me as a gift the things I needed to make a traditional Sex on the Beach (which is apparently quite different to the SotB that most people make these days).

Holy crap! Thanks for reminding me, I completely forgot about my almost full bottle of vodka in the fridge. And I thought I was running low...
