I am ready to order for a new system, I am going to go with the Zalman 7700cu cooling fan for the processor. I have a question on that fan, do I need to get a separate heatsink??? how does the fan mount????

I think the zalman is a hs, and you might get a fan with it. the fan mounts like any hsf, on top of the hs. just follow the instuctions that come with it.

give me a link to where you are buying it. if you don't get a fan, most people reccomend panaflos for cpi hsf's

OK, I was going to get it at Monarch, and stupid me didn't see that they sell it with or without a fan. The question I have now is the fan that comes on it worth it, or should I just go with something else. I am not real concerned about noise, I just want something that cools really well.

not trying to be a smartas$, but just try it and see if you like the temps. then buy a new one if you don't like it.

Well no probably not, I would then go with an XP-120 and get my own fan.

I hope I'm not the only person wondering if you've actually looked at a photograph of the heatsink/fan unit in question here ;) If you're blind, then you're excused for overlooking that.

The quoting thing is getting a bit out of hand.

Yes, the Zalman CNPS-7700Cu comes with a fan. You buy one with the included LED lighted fan or a regular 92mm (?) fan.

You do not need to buy a separate fan.

I've used the 7000AlCu (I LAN and I was concerned about the weight of the 7000Cu, much less a 7700Cu variant). You need to decide what you're looking for in your computer -- better cooling or more noise control -- because IMO, only buy Zalman for its silent to near-silent operation. If you aren't concerned about noise, go with a Swiftech or a TT, IMO.

I did not like the Zalman despite having a very quiet computer (Antec Super LANBoy Case, Enermax Noisetaker PSU, and fan controller to slow down even the low speed 120mm fans on the case). I found that it did not work very well for me because my friends with the retail AMD heatsinks were idling par with me or below.

This might be significantly different for you considering you may buy the bigger brother of the CNPS-7000, but I'd drop the $40-$50 in a XP-90/120 or a nice Swiftech. Bigger isn't necessarily better -- go with what fits your needs.

Good luck.

You cannot compare the temp of another PC with your system unless you're using the SAME temperature probe to check the CPU temp. We're also dealing with a different case with different internal layout, and room temp.

The Zalman is a MUCH better cooler than the stock AMD at high CPU load.
