Help with chess software Pleeeze

I had the chance to play chess recently. It has been a long time and I got my ass kicked. Oh well, after 15 years or so, that is not suprising. So I went looking on the web and downloaded Winboard. Seems there is this first rate engine for it called Crafty. I can't seem to connect to the ftp site to get it. On a side note I rarely can connect to an ftp site. Using XP. Anyway, any suggestions on how I can get it and chess software in general?

It has been a couple of days so I don't know if you are still interested, but you can probably pick up (chessmaster 7000) pretty cheap since (8000) is out now. It's a very well done program that can definitely help to polish your skills. As for myself I'm a real duffer when it comes to chess, but I love the game anyway. I play chessmaster until I get tired of getting my can kicked all over the place, then I put it down for a while until I think that I can face the humiliation again, and off I go for another butt whipping. Well Good luck! Sorry, I cannot help you with the FTP thing.

Crafty's strength is that it is modular, extensible, and cross platform, not its ease of use in installing. Try searching for "crafty for dummies" which is a smaller installation partnered with winboard for you. Or you could get a fully functional "demo" of Rebel 3.0 from Ed Schroeder site. Don't set the computer time controls too ambitiously, you can do a lot with GHz.

Since HermitGuy mentioned Chessmaster 7000 I will point out that it has some issues in Win XP/2000. Some crashes and some features dont work properly.

I apologize Hayabusarider I did not know about the xp problems. I have chessmaster loaded on my win-me partition, I have not loaded it on the xp side yet. Thanks for the info CrowDog I will keep that in mind if I do try to load it on xp.
