Help with Celeron 'A' 1GHz CPU in MSI 6905 Master Slocket in GA-6BXD mobo please!

I have a Gigabyte GA-6BXD mobo. I?ve just bought a Celeron ?A? (sSpec No: SL5VP see http://processorfinder.intel.com/sc...ocFam=49&PkgType=ALL&SysBusSpd=ALL&CorSpd=ALL) 1GHz processor (FC-PGA2) together with a MSI MS-6905 Master Slocket to allow it to fit into my Slot 1 mobo. I had intended to overclock the CPU while I wait for prices of PIIIs to come down so I can run SMP.

However, despite putting everything together as instructed (I think!), the PC immediately hangs when I turn it on.

What I?ve done so far goes thus:

All settings on the Slocket have been left at automatic, including the voltage setting (which should be 1.475V according to Intel).

I?ve tried JP10 on my mobo at both auto-detect and 100MHz FSB (The processor is 100MHz).

I visited the Gigabyte website and got a list of the suggested frequency ratios for the GA-6BXD mobo and for a Bus/Core Ratio of 10.0 the dip switches should be set at OFF, ON, OFF, OFF ? which I?ve done.

All this and the system still hangs. My question is simple ? although the answer may not be. Where am I going wrong ?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Your processor is a tualitin processor. It will not work in that slocket without modding it for tualiting compatibility (tough electric modding), or you could buy a powerleap slot-1 to fcpga-2 adapter. They are somewhat pricey though.

skypilot speaks the truth. Here is an AnandTech FAQ with all the technical details about why the Tualatin doesn't work with a BX chipset -- even with a slotket. The options are PowerLeap or a Coppermine Celeron. The Coppermine Celeron is much cheaper.

It is possible to run that Tualatin on your BX board, if you are willing and able to perform the required modifications.

Akumax is right. As long as you have the MSI 6905 Master ver 2.3 or ver2.0 you have a reasonably good chance of getting it to work. I don't know of anyone who has gotten the mod to work with your motherboard but it might be possible. Having the right slocket is certainly a good start. I have done the mod using MSI 6905 ver 2.3 with an ASUS P3B-F and Celron 1.1A@1.466. Bottom line, don't return anything yet.

I just went for the Powerleap. Popped it into my machine and it works great. No problems. $149.95 for the slotkit, 1.2Ghz Celeron( tualatin) cpu, heatsink, and fan dosn't seem to pricey to me. Espicially since it's faster and cheaper then the Slot1 P3-1000E.

Seems pricey when you could get a new Cely Tualy 1.0A for $65 at Newegg and a Abit ST6 mobo for about $80 elsewhere, totalling about $145 plus shipping. Then you OC it to 1.4 ghz - Both FASTER & CHEAPER. New CPU & Mobo that way... plus you could sell your old mobo! Cheaper all the way around me thinks.

My sentiments exactly, techwanabe. After buying a Celery 1.1A and and Asus Tusl2-C and dumping my old BX setup on Ebay, it came to about $110 for me. It's running at 1.41 Ghz no problems.

Yeah, for that price you could get an ECS K7S5A motherboard from Outpost and a hefty retail Athlon or Duron from Newegg. The K7S5A would let you use your SDRAM now and upgrade to DDR later. Plus it comes with sound and LAN which, if you are okay with the onboard versions, would allow you to sell your sound card and NIC along with the motherboard.
