Help with case and psu please. <---PLZ DON'T LET IT DISAPPEAR INTO THE NEVERENDIN ABYSS =*(

I bought a 500w psu , it had two fans, one on the front and one on the back, i had to take the one on the back off because it wouldn't fit in my case cause it has a pop up cooling thing. But will it hurt if i leave the fan off? There is still one fan in the front where it goes out the back of the computer next to the power plug things.

I know this isn't the right forum for this, but i need help like now and no one is answering me in the other forum.

The fans are only there to cool the nitroglycerine encapsulated IC's. Just turn the case away from you so the shrapnel flies into the wall when it explodes.

I can think of only two reasons a psu would have two fans.
1)It needs two fans because it gets hot.
2)It doesn't need two fans but it makes it wicked so you can impress your friends.

IMHO you'll probably be ok. If it gets pretty hot, you probably should have the other fan in there too.

If it has 2 fans, its probably for the reason that it might need 2 fans

500 watts is an overkill!

Think about it from a manufacturing perspective. It may just be 1 extra fan for you, but for them it's thousands of extra fans. Thats money out of their pocket. The second fan is there for a reason.

I got it off of anandtech fs/ft forum. I emailed colorcases about it and they told me just to take off the fan since my case already has good cooling (2 side 80mm fans and one top 80mm fan)

doenst matter the "case" has good cooling...the psu needs good cooling....put to much strain on that thing and it can heat way up

so i shouldn't even try to run it without two fans? its not so much the height of it, its just taht from its back to front is too big.

You may be able to get away with it. What you described does not really let me know what the situation is with your powersupply and your case.

If the fans are indeed located in the front and back, that is, they are placed back to back with the guts of the PS between them, one draws in cool air from the case into the powersupply and the other pulls the heated air from the powersupply to the outside.

outside <--- air ---[FAN] GUTS <--- air --- [FAN] <--- air--- case

you can do without the 2nd fan so... the outside fan will be the only fan drawing in air... unless your powersupply is very hot, which it should be since its 500W.

outside <--- air ---[FAN] GUTS <--- air --- [empty hole] <--- air--- case

if the powersupply does indeed need the extra air, replace the fan with a fan that moves more air. or 1. put the fan somewhere else to cool the powersupply 2. get a smaller fan and put it where it can cool the powersupply.

So what are you -wanting- to do with the thing. Are you going to be taxing the system, or just running things normally?

don't have anyway to take a picture, but here is my case - clicky that thing on top the "pop up cooling" inside the case there's like a little part in there with a bar, and the fan on the back of my psu is to big to go in front of the bar, the fan is not on the inside of the psu, its on the outside, the guy i bought it from might have put it on himself with a dremel, etc, but he still hasn't answered my pm about it yet.

i have it there, but no one is helping me, and the guy still hasn't pm'd me back yet :disgust: this is the only thing i'm waiting on til i can get my new computer up and running.
