Help with Camcorder

I know this may not be the right place for this post but any direction is grately appreciated.

I received a Canon ES 420V. I will use this camcorder to record the usually family outtings, my kids are 2 and 5, and will probably start to video edit the 8MM I have now. Is there a better camcorder out there for the same price? If I were to add $100-$150 US is there something else I should purchase?

Second issue: What should I use to edit my videos? Is the dazzle a good product? I am a total newbie to this experience. Any and all help (please keep it simple and not too complex)will really be appreciated
