Hi, I just got Earthlink cable internet, got it running fine through a Linksys router on my XP machine. Im trying to split the connection into another Win 98 computer that has always been dial up. I have the usb network adapter installed on the 98 machine, plug the ethernet cable into the back of the router and nic card, have everything set up perfectly for TCP/IP, all the lights on the router for that port and lights on the nic card look good, but it does not work at all. I tried to sign onto AOL with tcp/ip, says it cant connect, internet explorer will just crash with a invalid page fault everytime I open it. What can be wrong, isn't a router supposed to take 1 IP and distribute it to other connected computers? All the lights and settings on the 98 machine look fine, I tried winipcfg, everything looks good, what do I do, should I just install Win 2000 onto the 98 machine so it won't crash anymore? Thanks!

Is your Earthlink access PPoE? If it is, you will need to go into the router configuration and set up your user name, password, etc.

I know earthlink uses PPoE for their DSL connections.... I am not sure about cable...

Are your machines set up for Static IP or DHCP?
Both shoudl be set up the same. Since you seem to be new to this game and are connecting through XP then I assume that you are getting your IP address from the router and it is set up as a DHCP server. Make sure that your non XP machine is also set up to get an IP address from a DHCP router.

Debug your local LAN first. Make sure that you can communicate from one computer to the other.

Good Luck
