help with blue screen of death

Have an old AMD 2800+ on Abit NF-7s rev2.0 that I'm resurrecting for light browsing/gaming... it kept BSODing (even 1 time in safe mode) so I reinstalled XP +SP3 from fresh, put a new 1gb stick of RAM (another 500MB stick is left out till this is solved), removed cd/dvdrom drives, removed floppy. It's not overclocked either, as I went into the BIOS menu and loaded defaults.

But BSODs are still happening at random times as I'm simply browsing the web. The error is either PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA or IRQ NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL.

Like I said, new RAM stick, but the AGP video card is still old... 7800GS and so is the WD 80GB HDD. No other PCI cards other than a RALink wireless card, but it was BSODing even before that was put in. These BSODs are hardware related, right? What about drivers? Video card drivers updated.

EDIT>> just saw another forum post that says if the AMD chip is really hot, this will happen too... ever heard of this? Hardware monitor currently showing 160F.

Those errors generally indicate a hardware problem. Download WhoCrashed and tell us what module it's in.

160F is 71C, which is hot, but not not unusual for load. If that's idle temp though, you have an issue. Run the PC with the side panel off and see if its an airflow issue. Also, make sure the HSF is spinning. Finally, remove the HSF and apply a fresh batch of thermal paste.

Since its an old system, it could be that the HSF has alot of dust clogged in there
i took a blowdryer and blew all the dust out

thx I have been running it with the side panel off the whole time. I will work on some new arctic silver and re-seating the HSF. The case doesn't have an intake fan in the front and I will put one in, but I didn't think that would help with the case open anyway. If it's strictly a heat issue, I guess I'll be glad it's not really hardware malfunctioning. All existing fans are turning ok.

I have that mobo and ironically I very recently resurrected it and built a machine for a buddy in need. The chipset fan died a long time ago but I've found that as long as the chipset heatsink is kept clean it doesn't overheat (I'm not OCing either). I have very good case airflow in that case, though. Blow the dust out of the chipset and CPU heatsinks and get some air flowing through the case. If your CPU is idling at 71C you have a problem; I'm betting it's a combination of no airflow through the CPU HS and either bad contact b/t the CPU and HS and/or old thermal paste.

That's a good MB. As long as the capacitors on the board aren't leaking or bulging and you've got adequate airflow it will run forever.
