Current Berkeley students,
Help this fresh for selecting dorm, meal plan, etc.

I am thinking Unit 3 since it is closer to school. next choice is unit 2 or 1

what meal plan do you recommend?

I probably go with double room. What do I need to bring? since I don't have a car, I better bring EVERYTHING I need.

I have a modem in my pc. Do I need network card? Do I have to pay extra for internet connection?

for roommate, can I choose my friend as a roommate? or do they ramdomly assign anyone?

sorry if I asked a lot and thanks for your info.

1. I am thinking Unit 3 since it is closer to school. next choice is unit 2 or 1

Unit 3 is very close to school (about 1.5 minute walk and you're on campus). Very close to Shattuck Avenue and the BArt station for transportation. Right next to telegraph where all the shops and food are.
BUT, it is known as one of the more rowdy dorming comlexes. By that I mean it's gonna be a bit loud. Depending on the type of person you are, this may be good or bad. For me personally, it's a great experience because you meet lots of people and are always having something to do.

2. What meal plan do you recommend?

14 meals a week. You'll barely have enough time to eat breakfast. People here have adapted to a 2-meal-a-day eating scheme (brunch and dinner). 19 meals is way too much, and 10 meals is not enough. Flex plan is just a rip-off IMO.

3. I probably go with double room. What do I need to bring? since I don't have a car, I better bring EVERYTHING I need.

DON'T get a triple. It is hell. Double is workable because the room is enough for two people... not three.
Don't bring too much. My mistake was thinking that I need everything. Bring only what is necessary especially if you live near the bay area (since you can always go back home and grab what you need). If you live in so-cal, then bring even less because you can always go to target and buy what you need up here (the form of transportation all Berkelians use is the BArt, which will coneviently take you to Target, Staples, etc.).

4. I have a modem in my pc. Do I need network card? Do I have to pay extra for internet connection?

Yes, you need a network card. And no, you don't have to pay extra for internet because the absolutely ridiculous amount of money they're charging you to live in the dorms already includes the in-room t1 connection :). The sweetest thing about living in the dorms is the fast internet (even though it is capped at 5 gigs).

5. For roommate, can I choose my friend as a roommate? or do they ramdomly assign anyone?

Yes, you can choose your roomate. But make sure you both select the same answers when they're asking about roommate preferences. In other words, your online application should match eachothers to increase your chances of being selected as roommates. But you guys are pretty much guaranteed to live together.

I hope this helps. The best of luck to you!

thanks. Your reply is very helpful.

If unit 3 is too loud, which on do you recommend between unit 2 and unit 1?
I think they ask for alternative choice in case I don't get first choic.
