Hi
i have a laptop on my home network (wireless) that i want to assign a static ip address for port forwarding etc.

Basically, in the windows TCP/IP settings box, i enter the subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers, just as they are listed on the admin page of my linksys router (WRT54G). For the IP address, i just made one up. Normally the router assigns 192.168.1.xxx, where xxx is usually 1 to 50, so i chose 192.168.1.51, so there would never be confusion when the router assigns an IP address to another computer.

When i do this, i can get on my home network and access files on the server and stuff, but i cannot get onto the interet. The browser says "looking up", or "waiting". I also cannot use MSN or antyhing like that. What might the problem be?

Also, since i am assigning a static ip address, if i take my laptop to schoo and try to connect to a wireless server, its not going to work is it? i'll have to change the settings back to "assign IP autmatically" wont i.

thank you very much for any help.

use 192.168.1.1 as both the default gateway and the dns server in your tcp/ip settings.
change it back to "assign address automatically" when at school.

If you flash the Router with 3rd party firmware. You will be able to do IP reservation within the DHCP.

I.e. You can leave your Laptop set to obtain IP Auto, and with the IP reservation (aka Static DHCP) the Linksys would always assign the same IP to the computer.

One alternative is to use the "Alternate Configuration" settings for TCP/IP.

First, set ALL your home PCs to "Static IP" addresses. If it's a laptop and it'll be going to other locations, then set that Static IP address in the "Alternate Configuration" tab of the TCP/IP Network Properties. Leave the "General" tab settings at "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server address automatcally. Next, turn OFF your router's DHCP Server.

What'll happen is this:

1) When a PC boots, if it finds a DHCP Server (at school or elsewhere), then it'll accept the DHCP-assigned address.
2) If the PC DOESN"T find a DHCP Server (at home), then it'll jump to the "Alternate Configuration", which is a Static IP address that you've assigned.

==========================================
Here's the sequence that XP uses to determine an IP address for a network card:
1) If the "General" tab is set to "Use the following IP addfess", then the IP address is set to that manual address.
2) If the "General" tab is set for "Obtain an IP address automatically", then the PC will attempt to contact a DHCP Server.
3) If no DHCP Server can be found, then the "Alternate Configuration" is checked. If a "User Configured IP address is set, then that will be the IP address. If no manual IP address is set, then an "Automatic private IP address" is chosen, like 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.

cool
thanks for the help guys. May i ask why i use 192.168.1.1 as my gateyway and dns server? Is it because, basically my router sets up a dns server and gateway locally, so all local computers connect to the router, then the router does its thing with the internet?

your router is the gateway and DNS server and its IP address is x.x.x.1 on most if not all routers.
