help with aol mail and thunderbird/applemail clients

Hello, I have an aol email account and I just set it up with both thunderbird and applemail clients. I can receive and send email on both of my mail clients using the aol email address. however, when i mark the message as read or unread on the mail clients, it does not get marked read/unread on the AOL webmail account. Its odd, if I mark it read on TB, applemail shows it read as well. Same thing if I mark it as read on applemail, Thunderbird shows this status correctly as well. Either actions though, do not make it to the AOL webmail. Why is this? Anyone? Thanks.
