Help with an estimate pay rate for Web Development / IT job

Im about to graduate in 6 months. Ive been interning for the same company for the last 2 years. My boss wants to hire me after graduation and asked me today if I had a salary in mind. Im not really keen on workin here after graduation but the location and job security is right, so I'm debating it.

I do mostly web / ASP / XML / SQL stuff. I work in IIS and SQL Server.. and I designed, maintain and moderate the company Intranet. I also had a small hand in out companys corporate Internet site. I also do various inhouse tech support

My location is Boston MA and I currently make 15$ per hour with no benefits. So Im looking for a resource or suggestions as to what would be appropriate salaries givin my criteria.

I am hoping to get other offers from other companies, but knowing how the economy is Im not positive that will happen. So this job may be what I will have to take.

any info would be appreciated.. pace!

🙂

All I can say is that even at $15 if you could not get a raise it would be FOOLERY to quit that job. The market now is so sh*t it doesn't even exist, and coming out of school with a job, even if not ideal (who has an ideal one?) is SWEET like the sweetest of sweetness.

Just making sure you know that 😛

I don't know what living costs are but I'd be hoping for $50k though that's basing it on my belief that salaries are higher in Boston than many other areas. Realistically I'd say $40k is probably very very fair in this employment climate. I'm sure $40k would get him skilled workers with more experience if you weren't willing to take it 😉

$20-25 an hour with full benefits or you walk!

*hint* start at $30 and make the concession to $25 and make it seem like a big deal so he gives you $25! You might even get lucky and he will take $30!

You know if they accept your max figure you're feet will really be held to the fire since they will want every penny's worth... lol

If I were you I would tell him $20 an hour with full benefits. If you ask too high he might tell you to get lost, then YOU would be the one searching for a job. You are just out of school, get some more experience, then either search for a better job, or ask for an extensive raise.

Do u have any idea what other people are making? I find that you don't really have to give a figure.

If he asks say "I'm really not sure. I was hoping to get an idea from you. What would somebody in my position generally make?", sure he may lowball you, but you'll be in the ballpark. This way you're not asking for $45k and for some reason the company likes to pay $70k and just screwed you out of a whack of cash.

He wanted a salary figure, not an hourly figure...

With all the details you've provided, and assuming this isn't a large corporation, I'd say a starter (professional experience-wise) like yourself should pull in $40k-$45k or thereabout. In this market, that's a fair deal and all I'm really telling you is that is your worth in the market. It really does depend on the size of the company though and what their budget is, either way.

hey thanks for the info... unfortuneately i get the feeling that he is going to offer me a little below 40K which is my fear. I know people making in the 40ks now and I do alot more stuff than them and I have alot more reponsibilities than them..

My company is a private milling company.. its countrywide but fairly small i would say.. (one of our biggest customers is crispy cream)..

i would be very happy to make 45K but i doubt he will offer anywhere near that..

anyway.. thanks for the info.. keep on responding if you guys got stuff to add...

I work in Oregon for Eastman Kodak Health Imaging. I myself work as a raw materials tech (Not IT related). But I do know our IT idiots (sorry most of them are not to smart) start out at 50k to 55K. Then again Kodak is a large company.

Opossum

Anything above 35K a year is great... at 15/hr that's still about right consider... yes... the market is $hit.

I've seen people stoop down as low as $12 to just have a job... heck, I'd stoop that low as well.

You committed a Kardinal Sin!

Everyone knows you spell 'crispy cream' KRISPY KREME. You had better edit your message before the KKK (krispy kreme kops) come to get you!

Last year when I'd been unemployed for a while (university degree doing the same stuff cooltechie does and I had some experience), I interviewed for a job that paid $12/hour Can. The job was a joke, but if it had not have been I was willing to go that low for pay. That's how desperate I was. The economy blows for IT!

The economy sucks so bad right now I'm going back to school for a degree in something besides IT. I don't think there will be much IT work available in the next few years.
If he gives you 40k take it! Most likely 6 months after you graduate you'll still be looking for a job and will wish you took that 40k a year.

I hate to beat a dead horse but you're right. Hopefully we've convinced cooltechie of it, although like I said I'm not sure he thought any differently before but let me tell you a story:

I know a girl who got out of school in 2000 and has worked at the same IT company. She is doing well, making good money. They even offere for her to open up an office in Vancouver (she works in Toronto). She declined. Now, severa months later, she wants to live in Vancouver, and is thinking of quiting work and going there to look for a job. Mrsskoorb told her it's an asinine idea. Her mother said the same. I haven't spoken to her, but it seems that those who have not confronted month upon month of money-less unemployment truly can't appreciate how crappy it is. If this girl does this riduclous thing she'll learn.

Exactly I honestly think you should take the job.

If I got anywhere near $40k in your position, it's a no brainer... I'd take it in a heartbeat. ESPECIALLY in these times. I did a tad less than you for my first full-time job and they offered me $36k... I thought it was very reasonable. Reason being unless you get hired by a big-10 firm right out of school... anything around $50k+ is untouchable with no experience (full-time/professional).

with the way the economy is going these days you can't afford to be too picky. take it from a guy who has been unemployed for quite a while. take what you can get. it's a job.

As far as comparing your salary to the rest of the people working for the company...if they've been around longer than you, even if you do more, you'll most likely make less. That's just how things work sometimes. Lots can be based on motivation and accomplishment, but seniority can also play a role. If he offers you between 35 and 40, take it. Less than 35...try negotiating, and most likely still take it, heh.

Take the job, get a year or two valid experience under your belt, then jump if you want to.

yeah i understand.. actually though I go to a co-op school so Ive been working 6 months and then in school 6 months for the past 6 years. To be honest I have a very good resume with 2+ years exp with this company and 2+ years exp at another company.. I just dont want to short change myself on graduation by committing to a job that doesnt offer me much of anything besides stablitiy (which yes I understand is a big concern right now)

i go back for my final 6 months of school Jan 4th.. Im gonna send out some resumes ASAP when I talk to my advisor.. hopefully Ill get some kind of response so I know what to benchmark against, but if i dont then I guess I wont have much choice.. lol
