Help with adding plus for power supply

I searched around and couldn't find the answer to this. Sorry if it has been covered before.

I'm no newbie to building my own systems, but I've never really played around with the power supply. My problem is that I don't have enough open connectors to my PS available.

Right now, powered components in my system are:

DVD-ROM
Floppy drive
TWO 80-gig hard drives (raid)
Radeon 9700 Pro

I have one open power-supply connector. But, I really wanted to add two more hard drives to the system.

Questions:

Is that going to be too much for this PS to handle? And if now, how can I get extra power connectors? Is it safe to use some sort of Y-adapter?

I guess I'd be willing to get a new PS if I have to.... but obviously would rather not.

Any help you guys can provide is much appreciated.

Do not worry about how many open connectors you have, as this means nothing. Y splitters work great. The only problem you *might* have is a power supply that doesn't supply enough. What kind of a power supply is it?

I wish I knew. I'm sure it's faiyl generic.

Where would you get a y-adapter? some place like newegg?

one of those things I imagine I'll pay more much for shipping than the actual item.

Add up the prices of your drives and your R9700 Pro, and you'll realize that you've got a lot riding on your power supply 😀 so it would be smart to pick up a new one now, and maybe not have to buy a Y-splitter. Newegg has an Enlight 420W unit for $46 shipped last I checked, that would be a quality-name unit to consider and not very expensive, either. Antec's TruePower 430 is nice too, with a three-year warranty and some other special features, but it's around $81.

I'd error on the side of caution, especially since you are running a raid setup and just upgrade your PS. Most quality ps come with more connectors than you'll need. You can still get the truepower 430 for $66 from amazon.

A overworked ps can cause you all kinds of grief, from random crashes to killing components. If you have a lot of confiedence in your current ps, just get 2 splitters. I'd think hard on an upgrade though....
