Help with a64 3400+? Multi defaults to 9 instead of 11?

Yo guys, I just got my a64 stuff.


Here's what I have...

abit kv8 pro (new via chipset)
a64 3400+
2x512 Kingston HyperX 3500


Well, everything seems to be working fine, except that the mhz = ~1800 instead of 2200! From what I can tell, there's no multi control in the bios, and it reads as 11x as it should in the bios. But, in windows it's a different story.

In addition, I also made sure that cpu throttling and cool n' quiet were disabled.

Any ideas?

you prob just got a ratio/HT link/or cpu setting set wrong
bios's love to underclock things as default sometimes, either because the bios don't know what's going on (poor bios or don't recognize yur cpuid) or the bios creators like the idea of defaulting to the "safe" settings out the door so nobody fries there brand new 500 buck cpu or whatever 10 minutes after plugging the computer in for the first time.

probably just a bios setting (that board don't have jumpers for anything cpu related does it ?)
once you get you system fully stable you might also consider updating to the latest bios for that board if you havn't already, just incase (abit has the program that lets you auto update it from in windows now with a few clicks and a reboot) hasn't fried my ic7 max3 yet after like 3 uses, but it can be risky so be carefull

also, how can i tell what bios I have? With the abit boards, I thought the last number on the post screen generally was the bios number. Right now, it shows "11". I checked abit's website, and the latest they show is 10. hmmm...



btw, does having 1 ghz hypertransport enabled further increase performance without upping the cpu clock? just curious.

600MHz, 800MHz, and 1GHz hypertransport all perform about the same according to Tom's Hardware. I don't know how reliable or accurate that is, but I'm just providing you a sample.

My KV8 Pro board is doing the same thing. I have an A64 3000 cpu, the BIOS shows the multiplier as x10 [and it's grayed out] but it is only running at x9.

And there is no updated BIOS available at the moment.

this is slightly ot, but what psu are you using with your system?


btw, I have since gotten the mhz to show up correctly in windows... though I couldn't pinpoint exactly what did it.

I am using an Antec PP-352X power supply.

Have you installed the µGuru software?

yes, i have installed the uguru software. I first thought that may have been the problem. Eventually, I got them both working again though.


but, since, I've reinsatlled, and it looks like i'm having the same issue again Hopefully I can figure out exactly what I did so i can help you.



btw, did you install the amd64 driver that came on the driver disk? I'm not sure what it does, it refers one to a readme file.. a readme file that I can't find, so I'm scared to install it.

I am noticing discrepancies in cpu clock speed. µGuru will show 10Mhz faster than what is reported in the BIOS. I don't know if this is due to an issue with µGuru software or the BIOS but I would bet that a new BIOS will bring some improvements. You can see in the µGuru software that the AGP/PCI lock is grayed out; I suspect it will be enabled at some point in time.

hey guys, disable "amd cool and quiet" in the bios and see if that fixes it

Mine was already disabled in the BIOS but I just rebooted and enabled it just for kicks.

I can't overclock my chip at all. Running a 64 3200+ with 1 gig Mushkin 3200 on an MSI K8T-Neo.

Whenever I set the FSB higher, or attempt to clock anything upwards in the bios, the system simply freezes up and will not load. I had to force the bios back to default this morning with the jumpers....can anyone recommend a better plan of action? Thanks. My chip runs at 36 full load, by the way, I don't think it's a heat concern.

My K8V was like that on any bios other then 1005, I tried 1002 and 1003 with no luck overclocking. With 1005, straight to 220 worked perfectly. Are you on the newest bios for your board?

A couple of review sites had this problem with this mobo too, the multiplier would default to 9x instead of 10x, and as the multiplier cannot be changed in the BIUOS you're going to have to wait for a new BIOS revision, probably the same one that adds AGP/PCI lock to the board. Have you tried Clockgen?

I was concerned about this problem becuase I have the same parts on order, the 3400+ and ABIT KV8 Pro. Here is what I found out:

"The board is based on AMD's Socket-754 form factor, and supports CPU's up to the Athlon64 3400+ at this time. Interestingly, when we installed our test Athlon64 3400+ processor in this motherboard, Windows XP would only show the CPU running at 1.8 GHz (the default CPU clock for the 3400+ is 2.2 GHz). There is an apparent bug (Abit provides a fix or this on their driver CD) with Windows XP where it will not detect high-end Athlon64 clock speeds correctly. In order to work around this, we not only had to install the driver fix, but we had to enable AMD's "Cool and Quiet" technology within the motherboard's BIOS, after which time the CPU would be properly detected by the operating system. Unfortunately, there is very little documentation on this bug, and the only reason we stumbled onto a solution was by accident."
