No, this is an actual legit project. I have a friend whose mother is a teacher in that school in VA. She thought it would be good to send it along to me, since I know a lot people online. Then I thought there would be no better way to get a good variety of people from the internet than Anandtech :)

You have just disqualified the project by posting that message on a website. The message specifically requests communication through email. (a one-to-one medium) By posting this message on a public messageboard (a one-to-many medium) you have subverted the project's objective. Now they have to discard all of their data and start from scratch.
