Hi guys .. got a bit of a problem. I had a power spike bout 3 months ago and at that time i needed to replace the power supply and all went well ... for a while. since then I bought a UPS ( i know... the horse has bolted already). since then minor things have happened to a point now that i have no graphics output. I can tell the system is booting up and i can hear xps famous cry when its loaded (successfully), i can even hear the shutdown screen when i power off using alt f4 or press the power button. the problem is i dont have a visual, the monitor stays in power save mode (when the system is off and the monitor is still running you get that flashing light). I dont get a P.O.S.T screen of any description even though i am certain it is going through it's paces for load up.

WHat I've done so far to diagnose:
Ive changed the graphics card thinking that was it: new card did the same thing (both were nvidias so software wouldnt be a prob). both were pcie

Interestingly i tried boot up with no ram thought the mobo would beep or something but it just allowed the fans to go but made no progress further (still no output to screen)

Removed the gcard and booted up and it went through it's paces windows loaded according to the sound and shut down successfully.

Dragged out an old verge pci card ( though not sure if it was working though the system booted as usual but no output to monitor.

Tried my old 19" crt over the 22" LCD

Replaced ram with brand new ram, no joy.

I have unplugged all other cards, hd leads power leads except the sata drive.

I have tried to reseat cards and ram taking them in and out several times (power off when doing that) hoping for a better electrical connection.

that actually worked once and everything was fine, until I started it the next morning and back to everything fine but no output to monitor.

Comp specs:

asus a8n-e mobo
athlon 4000+ cpu
7800gt nvidia gcard (pcie)
250 gb sata HD

Any suggestions??

Does the fan on the video card spin up properly?

Are you sure the PCI card works ok?

What PSU did you get to replace your old one?

Hi Denithor, thanks for responding.
1. Fans spin up ok on both the old 7800gt and the brand new one which are pci-e
2. Pci card nt sure about as i dont have anything to test in.
3. I bought a 470watt psu only to get the machine going till i got my data off, then i intend to upgrade.

I have since taken the mobo out of the box and bench tested it as i was instructed in a forum that spoke about an earthing problem. that also had the same response, nothing.

I just can figure why only the vid output isnt working unless the slot is naffed. However there is no beeping from the mobo when i power up without ram or the vid card, although it still boots and loads normally (without showing on screen though).

Thanks
